In my Windows days I did some fairly intricate things with Access. At the time I was, among other things, a database administrator.
I currently use Bento 2 on my iMac. It is no where near as powerful as Access. That said, I do not have any requirements that would dictate the use of an Access like program. I mainly use Bento 2 to contain files that are cumbersome to work with in a spreadsheet like Numbers.
Bento lacks relational database capabilities, which limits its usefulness to people needing that kind of power. I am unfamiliar with Filemaker but I understand it is more Access like.
What I do like about Bento 2 is the ability to sync it with my iPhone. Since some of my files have information that cannot be stored in Address Book, I have a file with that info and can access it on my phone while away from my Mac.
