Changing Folder Type

I'm trying to find out how to change the folder type, not the icon, the type. There are different types of folders - applications, utility, download, generic, etc. Is there any way for me to change a generic folder to something else?

imac 7, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

VK is right. There is just one type. But to just cancel out my last statement, there are slight differences. The differences are the icons and the permissions.

An example if one that is a little outdated-The Applications folder at the top level would have different permissions from the Applications folder in your home folder. But they might both look the same.

If that is so, why then when i change 1 generic folder, all generic folders change? I'm not really sure what you are seeing, but I can see different folder types, as in generic, applications, etc. And i know how to change the icon, that isn't my problem at all. I am using a program called Candybar to change the icons, and you can clearly see the different folder types in it.

No. Applications is just the name of a particular folder. same with Downloads etc.

and now we come to the heart of the matter. you are using Candybar. Candybar changes the system icon used for all folders. if you want to change the icon for just one folder don't use Candybar. just use the link i gave you.

Not to be an *** Barney, but if I knew what I were doing would I really need to be on a forum asking for help? Ok, I tried the procedure from the link given by VK, although this is exactly what I first tried and found not to work, which is why I resorted to using Candybar. All this method succeeds in doing is changing the folder to the (for lack of a better word) "generic" png icon. I thought maybe changing it to jpg might help somehow, but now it's just the "generic" jpg icon. I am at the end of my rope on this one.

Please define "type"
If you check in a terminal, you will find that they are all the same type.
For example, what makes you think the Applications directory is different from the Utilities directory? And why do you think they are a different type from one you create by simply right-clicking and selecting "New Folder" ?

While there are some special types of directories, they are not usually accessible by a user. On such directory is .Trash. Others are the hundreds of hidden system directories.
Again, I do not understand what you mean by "type." Please clarify.
