LPs to IPOD

I am trying to copy all my old LPs and put it on my IPOD. I have the USB turntable and have tried several s/w programs. None really work well. I am havng trouble getting album info (that was inserted on the s/w) to transfer to itunes. It transfers as separate tracks and not into a single folder. Any programs that work well transferring LPs to ipods? I've even tried to brn cd and then transfer -- still problems.

And as I said, you may want to include a list of the ones you HAVE tried (as you mentioned trying several) so when I say, did you try Audacity, you won't say "tried that" after each suggestion.
Did an application come with the turntable?
I guess I am a little bit confused. Is your main problem getting proper info/tags in iTunes or are you having problems with the actual vinyl to computer transfer of the music?

Ok let me try again -- being stupid yesterday -- sorry! I bought an ION turn table and it came with Audacity -- not a great program to much hassle using trying to make individual tracks, burning, etc. I upgraded to the most current version (not the Beta one without documentation) of Audacity on line and not much better. Then I bought "Spin It Again" and sometimes the titles work (mp3 file or CD burn) no rhyme or reasson - sometimes it reads the title sometimes not. Sometimes it converts into iTunes and sometimes not regardless of which mp3 file or CD I've burned.)

Anything out there that works better than these for a semi-novice? I have a collection of 500+ LPs and then many many 45 singles I want to convert. So there is a lot of work and I want what is easiet and works the best. Thanks!

My advice is to spend the time with Audacity. You are going to have to invest a LOT of time doing this for your 500+ LPs. If you spend the time upfront, it will pay off later.

There is a reason professional services charge an average of about $15 per LP to this. It's not for the faint of heart. erm, which is why I decided to just buy CDs for my most-loved CDs. I just don't have the time, nor the money to pay a service.

In iTunes, if the tracks show up as being from different albums, select all the tracks from the album and fill in the Artist, Album, track x of y. This article has good examples:

I am a third of the way through the same process. It's taken me a year so far! Here is what I now do after lots of extensive trial and error:-
1. Use a program called Groove Mechanic to record the LP's (and cassettes)to hard drive folder
2. Use Click Repair (great program. bought it online for $30.00) to clean up the clicks and pops on the LP's
3. Use Cool Edit Pro (this might be hard to come by nowadays) to create good quality silence at start of LP, between sides and at end of LP. Also create a 2 sec dead silence in between tracks (to make it easy to find track breaks later on)
4. Back to Groove Mechanic to redo more clicks and pops, remove rumble/hiss and then to seperate into individual tracks which I save to a new folder under album name.
5. Then open a program called MisicBrainz Picard (this is not a mis-spelling) that you can download for free and it lists just about every album known so you can 'tag' your songs which saves you having to write tmem all to itunes.
6. Open itunes, file, 'add folder to library' then highlight all tracks from the album I just loaded to itunes and do a bulk edit of album and artist as well as other stuff.
7. Transfer to ipod
(This is why it's taken me a year!)
If you want any more details, let me know
Hope this helps

Thanks to all who responded. I've solved all my problems and now it's just a matter of "lots of time" to do this project. Turns out my cd/dvd drive was bad and creating all kinds of errors! With a new drive "Spin It Again" works really well. With the sound input turned up it picks up the tracks (I just did 3 LPs with 52 tracks) and all were perfect. You can select to remove pops and scratches and it does all of that very well. Who knew all the issues were hardware related!
