Can't connect to itunes store

Hi,
I downloaded iTunes yesterday and have never been able to connect to the iTunes store.

I keep getting the message: "*iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. The network connection timed out.* Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, then try again."

There is nothing wrong with my connection and when i run the diagnostics test it says "Secure link to iTunes store failed." I've allowed it through my firewall etc and i'm using avg virus protection. Even with all that turned off, I still get the same error. Could someone please help me? It's driving me mad!

I am afraid I don't know anything about Windows 7.

When all access to the store is blocked it is commonly down to firewall problems.

Have you tried briefly disabling the Windows firewall as a test?

Do you have any other firewall on your PC If so which one? If you are using another firewall, you don't want the Windows one.

Have you ever had Norton on your PC In XP and Vista PCs it is commonly preinstalled and can block even after it is uninstalled. It need the Norton removal tool to get rid of it.
Still I would not have expected Norton to survive an operating system change if that is what you did. Was it a clean install of Windows 7 or was it an upgrade from a previous version of Windows?

Otherwise, Apple offers various help articles on store connection such as:
http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/connect/
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1527?viewlocale=en_US

popup blockers and web accelerators can cause problems.

Occasionally a duff entry in the Hosts file can cause problems as in this thread:

Yes, I have turned off windows firewall (the only one i use) when testing, never had Norton on this computer, pre-loaded or otherwise, and it was a clean install of Windows 7 on a new hard drive.

I've tried all the help articles provided by apple (that was the first thing i done) and the thread you provided about the duff entry in the host file didn't help me. I don't use any popup blockers or web accelerators so it can't be that causing it.

I'm at my wit's end at the moment because the only reason I'm using iTunes on Windows 7 is because I couldn't get it to work on Windows Vista. I can't get the bonjour service running in Vista so it won't install.

OK I don't think I can help then, I have absolutely no experience with Windows 7.

Everything looks normal in your diagnostics except that all access to the iTunes store is being blocked.

Do you have access to another PC that you could try at your site. Preferably one that you know can connect from else where.

DO you have a friend who can connect to the store where you could try out your PC? Sometimes ISP issues can cause problems and it would be useful to know for certain if the problem is with your PC or you router/ISP.

A couple of things you might try. Bonjour has caused all kinds of problems although not this as AFIK. It might be worth disabling the bonjour service in Services as a test.
Also you could try accessing the store from another account on your PC.

I am pretty much out of ideas now.
