How do i change the burn speed? Having issues with playback in standard DVD

Have major issues with soundtrack, erratically changing volume OR not playing at all in parts, when I play a burnt DVD back on a standard DVD player (have tried a number of players).

The DVD plays fine in Quicktime, as a disk image and on the apple DVD player. As soon as I put in a DVD player, the errors occur.

Someone has recommended changing the burn speed. I have checked "help" but cannot see how to do this. Can anyone assist?

I have also checked the following:
- I have at 140plus GB hard drive available.
- Am using professional quality
- Have not used drop zones in IDVD

Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Open Disk Utility. Click on the icon of the disk image; then click on the icon for "Burn". In the window that opens, look for "Burn Options". Next to "Speed" there is a drop-down menu. Select 4x or lower, depending on the options available to you. The DVD needs to be inserted in order for you to make this selection.
