Problem recording Audio since 10.5.7 update

Hi,

I have a MBP Late 2008 and a Mackie Spike XD-2 sound card (used with USB), Garageband 4.1.2 and Logic pro 8.0.2

However since the update, every time I record audio with the Mackie, all audio guitar and vocals is distorted, crackly and almost electronic sounding.

I have tried it through Garage band and Logic pro 8.0.2. and both have the same effect.

I was able to record fine on 10.5.6 and I know that there is nothing wrong with the sound card as it works on another macbook running a lower OS prior to 10.5.7.

I haven't got time machine running. I do have an external HD for my PC but when I connected it to my mac it said that I would have to re-format it which I am unable to do due to the large amount of windows documents on it.

I am really unsure whet to do. Can you roll back to 10.5.6 by re-installing it? or if I re-install my original OS and update to 10.5.6 will it remove all of my data and programs.

Please help, I'l tearing my hair out here and really need to get my recording done.

Thanks

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Does the problem persist after a restart? Does it happen in all USB ports? If you are going through a hub, does it happen plugged right into the laptop?

Next thing I might do is check the Mackie web site to see if there is any updated driver software or firmware for your equipment.

If necessary, it should be possible to select the Archive and Install option (protecting your data and applications) from the original discs that came with your computer, and then download the combo updater for 10.5.6.

Yes it is with both USB ports and directly through the laptop.

I have the most up to date driver software and firmware. I have also been on their forum and no one has reported this yet. I've restarted Logic, and my laptop several times and there's no difference.

I've tried a smaller m-audio fast track USB sound card with it and that one is completely fine (it's not mine though so I can't keep it for long).

Thanks loads for your reply, I'll try the archive and install first and see what happens.

Hi there, I pretty sure i have the same problem thats mentioned here, and have searched the web high and low for someone in the same boat!
I have just got a new MBP 15" 2.4 Ghz and was hoping to use my Mackie Xd-2 usb soundcard to record with. I can record for about 30 seconds before i start hearing some clicks and pops then after about 2 mins the sound becomes very distorted almost soundindg like ring modulation.
The xd-2 worked fine with my old G4 powerbook so i'm pretty sure its a software issue with leopard and the core audio usb drivers...
There only seems to be one firmware ever released for the mac (v1.0.0) and Mackie state that it is compatible with Mac os 10.3 and higher.
Is this then a backward compatibiliy problem with the new Mac os 10.5.7 and should i now be looking at installing an older version of Mac os X on my new computer to get started on some recording?
Any comments or advice appreciated!

Ok so we can all look forward to buying new printers when the next update comes out!...No jus joking but really they must have some liability for ensuring the compatibility of 3rd party devices that were compatible in previous versions of Mac os x. I mean mackie doesn't write the software?
I am trying to get in touch with tech support at Mackie but have heard this is easier said than done...

Of course not, but some old printers and other hardware will eventually not be supported.
According to Apple, Snow Leopard will only run on Intel machines.

No jus joking but really they must have some liability for ensuring the compatibility of 3rd party devices that were compatible in previous versions of Mac os x.

They cannot insure that each and every piece of hardware in the world is supported by every update. It's up to the user to properly vet the updates. The best way is to clone the OS and update the clone and see what works and what does not work.

I mean mackie doesn't write the software?

They don't? Somebody does. Maybe that's the problem.

Got this msg back from Mackie tech support and thought i'd post it...

Hello

Thanks for writing. The XD2 has been a discontinued product for over
about two years now and is not officially support on OS 10.5 so I can
not say how well the XD2 will work or not. We have not supported the XD2
since erlie OS 10.4.

Sorry for the inconvenience

All the best

Inconvenience is a bit of an understatement....I mean they are still selling this product on their website but appaantly it is discontinued! I guess my only option now is to downgrade my system to tiger and be permanently stuck in the past as far as os is concerned or i can fork out for a new soundcard that will work with Mac os 10.5.7 and above (for a while)...

Same problem here. I can't get my Mackie XD-2 to stop making crackles and noises when playing or recording instruments/mics since last update. I've tried different sequencers and different configurations but the problem persists.

I had the same problem when using the XD-2 on a pc running windows xp so i guess this issue must be a driver problem.

Any help would be great.
