My MacBook Pro (original model) would not boot either - just a gray screen and no shell mode via cmd-s. This happened after the restart due to installing Safari 4.

Try holding down the option key while restarting. You should be able to select your hard drive and then boot as usual. After reboot, go into System Preferences->Startup Disk and select your Hard Drive again.

even holding the command key doesn't work... I just get a gray screen with spinning thing and fans starting up after 1 minute...

If i start up with advanced save mofe i get a message :
error mapping module file com.apple.driver.apple.cpupowermanagement

and

BCD root: Disk0s3, major 14, minor 2

I already reset the PMU ans SMU but didn't work

does anyone know what these "codes" mean?

I update all of my macs today and 2 of the 4 will not start up after the Safari 4.0 update. The MacBook pro gave me a warning that it could not install Safari 4 because it could not verify it (or something to that effect) and forced me to reboot. After reboot all I get is grey screen. Can't boot in safe mode.
My old 1ghz Titanium did not give me the warning, but will also not start giving me only a grey screen with Apple logo. What is going on???!!!

I also had this problem when I installed Safari 4 update this morning. After reboot system startup freezed just before showing login window.
After some research I discovered that the problem was a missing file:
/System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework/Versions/A/QuartzCore

What I did was creating a soft link to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Safari.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Quartz Core.framework/Versions/A/QuartzCore

The command was:
ln -s /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Safari.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Quartz Core.framework/Versions/A/QuartzCore /System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework/Versions/A/

Maybe this will help someone.

I don't know if this is related to the new Safari install, but I seem to have lost my desktop access. No icons show up, no servers... just my background image. I already checked my Finder prefs to make sure that icons would show on the desktop and they should be there. Repaired a ton of permissions and SafeBooted once. Still the same thing.

Anyone else had this happen?

bartek, sorry for the confusion, of course it works, thanx loads!!
i just found that i had different visibility prefs on my emergency-boot-system, hence the confusion.

so i managed to boot into single user mode (apple+s) on my crashed OS X 10.4 and entered the prompt above (which is a pain BTW when you don't have an english/international keyboard layout ...) and when i EXITed the machine started as usual.

well this took half of my work time today ... but, solved for me now.

did i say thanx loads? ;-}

-> Bartek, i'm not a real technical guy... can you explain this to me in a simple way or in easy steps how to do this?

thx
