.DMG Failed to Mount

I have a .dmg file that when I try and mount it and it gives me and error saying Failed to Mount with the reason listed as "not recognized". What does this mean and is there a solution to the problem? Thanks.

Means no mountable filesystem, the file is damaged, it isn't really a .dmg file, or it lacks the proper association to the DiskImageMounter application. Check the latter by selecting the file then pressing COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section check that the afore mentioned application is shown as the default. If not then locate it in /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder.
