'Phone line connection

I've just moved myself and my old imac CRT in with my partner. She has a PC and broadband with BT. I plugged my imac into the 'phone extension hoping to be able to use my old dial-up but got no dial tone. Then we found the phone didn't work either, not to receive or dial out. BT told us that the mac was interfering with the installation and that I'd have to get a wireless router.
Please can you advise. I'm happy to go wireless but what do I need. I am just upgrading from OS 9.2.2 to Tiger.

The iMac is not interfering with anything--that's just a standard response from a tech staff that's not familiar with Macs. I don't see why you need a wireless router in particular . . a basic wired router would also work. The object is just to share the broadband connection. If a wired router would work with your setup, you don't need anything special--you'll just connect by the existing ethernet port on the Mac. For info on adding wireless connectivity to your iMac, see this article by forum member Duane:

You can search this forum and find many discussions and recommendations for a bridge device such as the WET11 or WET54 by Linksys. These work without drivers and avoid the need for any internal installation, since they connect the wireless antenna to the existing ethernet port.

By the way, OS 9 or OS X would both work for sharing the connection, either wired or wireless.
