I finally purchased my iPhone 3g on Sunday, June 8. Less than 24 hours later, I find that (what I was feeling very good about) I am suddenly not at all pleased with my purchase. I was not aware of the new 3g s coming out.

I phone the AT&T store and they claimed ignorance. I am told I will have to fork over an extra $60 if I want to either A. get a price reduction or B. even exchange for the 3g s. In either case it does not feel good to me. Especially since I upgraded my son's phone at the same time, purchased accessories, etc. and spent over $500 at the AT&T store.

I hope that Apple and AT&T will do the right thing here and make people like me (who have made their purchase within the returnable timeframe) whole. At least offer service or accessory discounts to offset the restocking fee. Otherwise I feel totally ripped off.

Anyone can quote me all they want about 2 year contract costs, blah, blah, blah... the fact is when I made my purchase, someone at some point had to have thought about the consumer and figured, "on well... we're big companies and they just signed that contract after all... we'll stick it to them in the end"

I hope I get a response here - I am NOT happy.

Still want to be happy with my purchase - want what I paid for, which was a 3g s!

If you do a little research, searching either here or out on the net, you will know that you can return the phone to AT&T (if that is where you bought it from) and swap it out or upgrade to the 32GB model depending on which model you purchased. You might want to call the store back and ask for a manager or move over to the AT&T website.

You won't get an "official" answer from anyone here, this is a user-to-user support site.

From my experience with AT&T, yes. There have been many times in the last 10 years (CellOne, Cingular, AT&T) that I have gone into their store and said that I would like to purchase a new phone, and played dumb. When they pull up my information and see that I'm within a one month range of my contract being up, they have always been very generous in allowing me to upgrade earlier than I should be allowed to, while signing a new contract of course...

Thanks... I bought the 8gig model.

I phoned AT&T corporate and was told I would have to pay a "restocking fee" of $60 (for the upgrade).

I have heard stories here and there about not being charged the restocking fee, but nothing officially from AT&T. The manager at the store I bought mine and the store nearby my work location both said I would have to pay the restocking fee for the 3gs 16gig model ($199). Even after I complained that I am paying $60 more than what they are charging, I get a half-hearted apology and take-it or leave-it attitude.

To clarify I'm not upset :P I'm put-off perhaps, but I'm okay with the 3.0 upgrade till my contract runs out.

deggie: Exactly part of what I was saying. It will take a revolution, not an evolution.

Is this that revolution? So far it doesn't seem that way since Apple has not announced anything, even after all the 'talk'. Here's for hoping though.

isn't the idea of a contract to get you to CONTINUE to pay them longer???
If I pay $150 per year ($1800/year), and I only have one year left on my contract, then they are out the extra $1800 if I don't upgrade. Why wouldn't they just have you sign another contract? It's the perfect excuse to get them to sign up for another two years.
They get their subsidized phone money back and then some, but they get nothing if the millions of people who upgraded last year get totally ****** off and have the choice next year to go to another carrier....maybe by then someone else with have the iphone.

Who cares about eligibility now? that is such a dinosaur philosophy. The modern consumer isn't going to wait two years, the technology isn't waiting two years...ATT is the only one that think this is a good idea. It's going to hurt them in the end.

"can anyone say BLACKBERRY!!"

Not here they won't.

Anyway, I hear what your saying, BUT, no one is telling you you have to upgrade. Again, it's a choice. If you choose to upgrade while still under contract then you are agreeing to pay what you need to pay to upgrade. Why would that be anyone else's problem? I just don't get it. It is what it is, but you can say no thank you and wait until your contract runs out. If you must have the iPhone 3GS as soon as it comes out (and you're still under contract) then I think the real issue is your lack of patience, no?

A friend bought her iPhone on May 11th, was told by the Apple store yesterday that she can only upgrade to the 3GS if she turns her iPhone in within the next 2 days and orders the 3GS. In other words, she needs to go without having a phone for more than a week, how insane is that.

By contrast, if she had bought through AT&T they would have allowed her to pre-order the GS and then exchange her old phone once the new one came in.

Apple's policy in this regard is insanely bad customer service.
