Yeah, especially because this is something that never happens! Companies never upgrade their hardware, equipment or software. The horror! How dare Apple upgrade the iPhone! They should just stick with dated hardware. That's the way to keep people interested and ahead in technology.

I'm real sick of people bit@hing about things that happen all the time. Get over it already. Get off of the merry-go-round if you don't want it to keep goin' 'round.

I've read that there's a 30-day exchange period... check with your AT&T store and see. You can always do a return--and even take a restocking hit if there is one. Could be well worth it, especially considering how small an amount that is compared to the money you'll fork over during the length of a 2-year contract! Wouldn't you rather have the 3GS over the next 2 years?!

You aren't being punished, either by Apple or AT&T. You signed a contract, you agreed to buy a subsidized phone, now you need to complete paying off that subsidy. Works that way with all cell phone manufacturers and all cell phone providers in the US. Nothing wrong with it and it has worked this way for a long time...at least a long technology time.

What other cell phone company allows you to upgrade while still within the contract and doesn't charge the unsubsidized price? I used to have Verizon and they don't give you any "credit" towards an upgrade while still under contract. If I wanted another phone I paid full price (and I was close to the end of the contract).
I'm amazed at the utter feeling of entitlement so many people have.

It's not a feeling of entitlement. I'm one that sat in line for both the first and second phone. Yes, I like to have the latest and greatest and sometimes you have to pay to play, I totally understand. I'm willing to wait until 8/10 when I'm eligible for the discounted price, BUT, does Apple want everyone to wait? Think about it. Why wouldn't they want every single 3G user to get a 3Gs as soon as they possibly can? Isn't their goal always to sell as many units as they can as fast as they can?

For people like me, not a big deal. I'm doomed to always want the NEW, so I'll play the game. For others, the hype will die down and when their time comes (contract expires) they might not be so enthusiastic anymore.

This is ridiculous. I spent 600 dollars two days after the original iphone cam out, and then another 300 last summer after spending the night in front of the ATT store. After finding that once you are an iphone owner and buy the newest model you will not be punished come next summer, however ATT has decided to slap every one of its customers in the face. Good luck to Apple and ATT having the worst quarter of iphone sales in over two years.
