Preview next image using arrow key

Preview next image using arrow key

I wish to view all of the several hundred images in a folder by selecting the next or down arrow but nothing happens. I have read several posts on this topic and cannot make sense of them.
Could someone please explain how I can do this?

IMac 24 inch, Mac OS X (10.5.7), New to Mac

I do it as follows...

find the folder in question,
select all (command-A),
open (command-O) which opens them in Preview with
a thumbnail pane down the right hand side,
use the down-arrow key to move through them

Thank you so very much. I have been struggling with this problem for ages. I should have trusted that Apple would not have a dud program.

Why not QuickLook or CoverFlow in the Finder?

You should also be able to use Quicklook, once you have selected
all the images, using the right and left arrows. I haven't tried this
yet as my main machine is 10.4.11 where you can open as a slideshow
but this has a limit on how many it will show.
