can't access my Gmail on my iPhone - HELP!!!

I can't access my Gmail on my original iPhone. I get the following message:

Cannot Get Mail
The connection to the server "imap.gmail.com" failed.

What's the deal? This has never happened before. Please help!

P.S. I can access Gmail when I'm connected to wi-fi. The problem is when I'm simply on the edge network...thanks.

The same thing is happening to me! Except it doesn't work when I'm using wifi either.
How do I fix this??

Hi,

Can you view any webpages or use any apps that need Internet access while on the EDGE network?

Try restarting the iPhone by holding the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears> then slide to turn off> and turn the iPhone back on by pressing the Sleep/Wake again, as described on page 34 of the iPhone User Guide.
