Weird mouse/cursor behavior: Sticking & jumping

This problem has happened intermittently since I got my MBP. Lately, it's gotten much worse.

After using the computer for awhile, the mouse cursor sometimes starts to "stick" -- it causes me to drag windows around when I haven't clicked to do so; when (for example) I try to click on a link on a webpage, the link text "sticks" to the cursor and gets dragged around the screen instead; the dock is inaccessible unless I both click AND move the cursor to the bottom of the screen; and the cursor suddenly jumps from one part of the screen to another without my touching the mouse.

I used to think that it was something about the Logitech wireless mouse I've been using. But in the past day, even with the wireless mouse turned off, the problem occurs with the trackpad as well.

Has anyone else had the problem? I'm reluctant to bring the MBP to the Genius Bar because the problem is intermittent and hardly ever shows up until I've used the computer for awhile.

Thanks!

I'm having a similar problem with an Apple keyboard/optical mouse. The cursor will just "stick" sometimes -- no response from the mouse. Sometimes it will start again after the "stick"; other times, I have to hot-plug the keyboard's USB connector to get it moving again.

I've tried switching USB ports on my MBP, but get the same result. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I've had that problem since I purchased my MacBook about 2 years ago. I've even flatten and installed new OSs over this time, no change. The behavior I have is the cursor sticking after just about any input which requires the computer to do some processing (ie: copying and pasting text, performing edits a photo, renaming a folder, etc...). It's very distracting when you're working hard on a document or drawing and constantly waiting for the cursor to unstick. Believe it or not, I've actually gotten used to it. Good news is, I'm buying a MacBook Pro soon, and giving this computer to my wife. I'll freak if the new Pros do it too. No......! 🙂

I have a similar problem. I'm using a bluetooth mighty mouse. After using my MBP for a while the mouse/pointer will decide that it wants to have a party and sporadically jump around. From what I can tell I think it's heat related. If I stop doing anything that is especially taxing or causing the machine to get extra warm the problem will subside and everything goes back to normal.

Have any of you with this problem noticed whether or not your machienes were particularly hot?

in response to your ipod problem which is now archived, if you can get the audiobooks to appear as podcasts then a "go back 30 seconds" button appears where the "genius" button would usual be in the music app.

Otherwise, in 3.0 then you can simply drag DOWN before you drag across, and the further you drag downwards, the smaller the effect across is. When you drag down it will have the message "Slide your finger down to adjust the scrubbing rate."

i am having the same problem and believe it is heat related too! the only way i can get it to stop is if i close my computer walk away for a while and then come back when my computer is cooled down. then it is working fine again.

what does this mean? does this mean that the computer is overheating and something is going wrong with the cooling system inside? Or it could just mean it has a lot of dust inside that needs to be cleaned out.

i have a request for Apple to call me today so hopefully i can find out what the issue is.
