Adjusting Date and Time on tif images

I have many slides and photographs that have been scanned. I have gone into each file in iPhoto and adjusted the data and time (checked the modify original file). However, when I export the file, the new date that I specified is not with the file. It shows the date I originally scanned the image rather than the date I changed it to in iPhoto. Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this? I don't want to have to make jpegs due to the compression of the jpegs and these are archival photographs.

Scanned images do not have IPTC fields so the only date that a scanned file can use is the file created or modified date. So it wouldn't matter if you scanned into jpeg you still wouldn't get the date into the file as you do with images from cameras.

You can use a 3rd party application that can change the file created date to the one you want.

Personally, I would rename the file with the date you want using the international date format YYYY-MM-DD. My image files end up something like this: 009-05-23-Rylees 1st-001.jpg. This provided quick alphanumerical sorting which is also chronological. Makes searching for a date easy also.

You may need to use a third party application. For example, GraphicConverter can change the date of a number of places from file creation date and modification date to EXIF and IPTC dates, although only the first ones, creation/mod dates, probably apply to TIFF files.

Thanks for the information. It's a little frustrating that iPhoto doesn't do this. I am coming from a PC background where Adobe Photoshop Elements Organizer embeds the date into what appears to be the XMP - Create Date. I wish iPhoto would do something like that. It's extremely frustrating for me as I have thousands of scanned slides and photographs.

Unfortunately, I can't rename the file to the date because the filename is used to show where the original file was located.

With the latest version of iPhoto (maybe an earlier version but I didn't check it out) iPhoto will create the EXIF Date Created field in the file and add the date you enter if you use the Photos->Adjust Date and Time menu option.

If you select the option to Modify the original files the modified file will also have the date embedded immediately and you don't have to export it with the metadata option to get in the modified version.

HOWEVER, none of this works with tiff files - at least I've not been able to get it to work with them.

I can get EXIF File Captured dates into tiff files if I convert a jpg or Photoshop file with such a date to tiff. But not with iPhoto.

I have an older version of Portfolio Extensis where I can embed a date into a specific EXIF data field, but I can't figure out what field I should use to get iPhoto to recognize the new date. Does anyone know? Or, does iPhoto just ignore dates completely for non-digital camera files?
