Convert dv to aic (pal) - 960 or 1024?

I use the workflow in Steve Mullen's ebook to convert dv to progressive aic (in order to avoid the quality loss). Now in Steve's previous ebook it was considered necessary to convert the pal dv files to exactly 960 * 540. In Steves new ebook the advice for pal is 1024 * 576. I guess this is because iMovie 09 handles aic 576p correctly and does not interpret it as interlaced like iMovie 08 did.

Now I am not sure which would be a better choice for me. It kind of makes sense to convert to 960 since I use Apple Tv and sharing to iTunes makes it 960 anyway. Converting the horizontal resolution back and forth (720 > 1024 > 960) does not sound nice. On the other hand I also occasionally export to DVD. In that respect it perhaps is better if the vertical resolution remains original from the beginning (576) and converting the vertical resolution back and forth (576 > 540 > 576) is avoided?

Steve and others, any advice?
