Recording an external SMPTE Time code during capture

How do you control your devices in Final Cut?

Normally the time code information goes via the RS-422 Machine Control, 9 pin D connector on your AJA card.

I should like to know an answer to this too.

Recently I covered a conference and wanted to take a live video feed into FCP together with a centrally generated timecode feed.

Obviously I did not have a deck connected.

In avid you can select an external timecode (deck, internal, external or auto) when digitising, with no deck control

In the end I recorded the feed and then modified the timecode to match a known event, not an ideal solution.

I suppose it would depend on your capture card.

If you can get the external timecode to enter FCP via the RS-422, you can still capture now, with timecode enabled no?

Or you need a capture card with a TC input (The AJA has a LTC BNC input)

You can't with Final Cut Pro unless you capture with a tape machine as has already been stated.

If you have no tape machine you need a provision to insert the timecode into the rs422 datastream, like the [Horita TCI-50|http://www.horita.com/smpteltc.htm#RLT-50] or an [Adrienne|http://www.adrielec.com/box20lit.htm] interface. You may also want to investigate RP-188 timecode which SMPTE says "Transmission of Time Code and Control Code in the Ancillary Data Space of a Digital Television Data Stream." You probably can use [Aja's VTR Exchange|http://www.aja.com/support/kona/kona-lse-ls.php] software which will capture embedded RP-188 timecode if the video you are using does contain RP-188.
