iDVD ejects disk during multiplexing and burning

Having burnt many DVDs previously, I have suddenly started struggling.

Having edited in FCE HD v3.5.1, I export to Quicktime and then build the dvd as normal in iDVD.

The project has no errors and then I burn it using Verbatim 16x certified 4.7GB/120 min Advanced AZO+ DVD-R disks.

During Multiplexing and burning (with between 1 and 3 mins left, it ejects the disk saying saying done but nothing is burnt.

To try to remedy this, I have set the burn speed to both 2x and 1x. I have also turned the computer off, removed all cables and battery, held down the power button for 10secs then rebuilt and retried. Still nothing.

I saved a disk image but I don't know how to then make that into a burnt dvd. Any advice on that would be appreciated but moreover, I'm sure I shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops to burn a dvd - Mac's should just work shouldn't they.....?!

You seem to have tried almost everything recommended here - highly commendable, as is the fact that you described what you had already done. 🙂

One thing left; try cleaning the Superdrive: any proprietary CD or DVD player lens cleaner that does not use liquids will do the job.

Sometimes a simple permission repair and a reboot of your Mac will fix it.

I had exactly the same problem. However the problem went away when I switched DVD media from an unbranded variety to a better quality branded (X16).
This was really a last gasp for me, as previously the unbranded media had performed just fine. Just to be sure, I burned 2 copies, and both times it worked. I tried the unbranded media again to make sure that nothing else had changed, and it failed as it had done previously.

I ran into this same problem myself today. After reading various posts, it seemed promising to let the Disk Utility handle the burning step (using an image created by iDVD). This worked just fine for me:

1) Use iDVD to construct a DVD project. I recommend using Save As... to give it a name specific to the project, and to save the project file in a known location (e.g., your Documents folder).
2) Choose File>Save As Disk Image..., and save your .img file to a known location (e.g., your Documents folder)
3) Quit iDVD
4) Launch the Disk Utility (usually found within the Applications/Utilities/ folder)
5) Choose File>Open Disk Image... and select the .img file you created in Step #2
6) Click the Burn icon at the top of the dialog
7) Insert a blank DVD when prompted and hang out while it's being burned and verified

I've also had problems with some of my blank DVDs, but I believe the underlying problem others are running into here is due to a bug in iDVD itself.

Here's even more of an update, with no joy....

to refresh, I have a macbook pro 15" - the older one with the silver keys.

I make 3 min movies in FCE then export using quick time conversion and try to burn with iDVD.

The problem: I can burn data CDs but i can't burn a DVD anymore. This seemed to start after the update to 10.5.7. At that point I tried to fix it with no joy so due to deadlines, used another machine! Now a few months later, i come back to it and still no joy.

I have reset the PRAM
I have reset the CMR
I have upgraded to Snow Leopard
I have sprayed compressed air into the drive
I have reduced the burn speed to 1x

But still I can't burn a dvd. When iDVD goes through the stages, everything is OK until it gets to multiplexing and burning, it says it is 'writing lead in' and has 1 min left (or 2 mins when burning at 1x). Then the blue status line suddenly goes all along and the machine spits the dvd out saying done. (although iDVD does not revert to beginning of the process, it kind of freezes).

idvd version 7.04 if I hadn't said before.

Please help, I'm despairing....
