Wi-Fi Auto Login & Saved Usernames/Passwords Problem in iPhone OS 3.0 (GM)

I work at a University and we have campus-wide WiFi. It requires you to log-in via a web-browser page (you are automatically redirected when you open your browser), like a commercial hot spot. The new Automatic WiFi Login feature of 3.0 (GM) doesn't work for me. The process is definitely different, but doesn't seem to be totally working. Instead of being redirected to a log-in page when I open Safari, now a window slides up from the bottom of the screen with the log-in page. I type in my username and password, hit go, and it works like normal, only since the log-in page is now on a slide-up page, it just slides down and goes away, and I go about my business.

The way my campus' network works, if you are inactive for a long enough time (somewhere between 15-30 minutes, I'm not sure exactly) you're logged out so when you start browsing again you have to log-in again. It's a giant pain for iPhone users seeing as most browsing sessions on the iPhone are pretty short. As a result, I'm typing my username and password into that log-in page multiple times a day (between 3-10 depending on how much I use the phone). I don't know what's up with it, but in the new version of Safari under 3.0 (GM), when I'm logging in to web sites, it doesn't ask to save the password every time. For example, it won't ask to save the password when I go to Twitter's mobile site, but it will when I go to Facebook's. I'm not sure why it is only remembering information for certain sites. My campus log-in page is one of these sites. When I log-in via the new slide-up window, it doesn't offer to remember the info, so I'm assuming it can't pull it back up to do the automatic log-in, which is why I think it isn't working.

Specifically, when I connect to the network now, the phone appears to try to auto-connect (screen dims and shows "connecting") but eventually gives up and slides the manual log-in screen up.

Anybody else have experience with this?

I have a similar issue on the iPod Touch, though I have even more problems. I can not connect to the Network at all.

I connect to the wifi, then run safari and go to google.com and will be redirected to our PIX-server login page. Auto-login pops up, waits a bit and then tells me it doesn't support http-password requests and displays the pix-server page, but not the popup with the password request, so I am stuck. I can only abort, which disconnects me from the wifi and start over, which doesn't get me anywhere.

Here is my post with some more people with similar problems:

I just installed version 3.0 which was officially launched today. I have the same problem. So far I have tried 5 different sites where I log in with user name and password, and only one has offered to save that information. On the one that did, it properly filled in the information upon return to that website.

On the other, of course it did not, since it has not saved the information.

I hope Apple figures this out soon.

I've noticed that when there is any HTTP or HTTPS authentication request (on a computer a window would pop up asking for username and password instead of it being built into the page) Safari will not ask to save this information and it will not save it.

I've not had any problems with it saving the information when the Username/password fields were built directly into the page.

Another "Me-too" for this problem. I work at a University in the UK and had bought the Autowifi app to avoid always having to enter user and password details whenever I logged-on to our wifi network.

The new OS3.0 feature brings up a window to enter details every time it needs to reconnect. I've had to turn off the OS3.0 autowifi feature to use the old autowifi app, however the iPhone seems to be struggling to find wifi connections in general today.

Not ideal.

I tried this new auto login feature in a hotel in Germany (T-Online Hotspot).
Seems to me that this feature works - sort of. If you switch your iPhone on and off on occasion it works pretty good, also walking around in the hotel did do no harm to the connection. _But after having it switched off for some longer time_ maybe for an hour or so, it demands you login informations again. Even if I didn't moved out of the hotel.
It's a pity, I really waited for this feature to become available!

Based on this news story (linked below) it seems that Hot-Spot owners have to include support for the auto-login function included with iPhone 3.0. In other words, it's not supposed to be saving our login credentials for hot-spots. It's only supposed to be sliding the login window up, so everything is working properly in that department.

However, this still doesn't explain the problem of poor wifi reception under 3.0. I've switched to the final public release of iPhone OS 3.0 and am still getting poor reception at hot-spots. Reception seems fine at non-hot-spot locations like my house and my friends' houses, but there is a marked decrease in signal strength at the university where I work.

I also have this problem. At the library near where I live the wi-fi has a spash page, and you have to check a box and click a button to accept the usage terms. No password or usernames are required. When I connect and open safari or mail, the screen greys out and I see a spinning icon labeled "connecting". The first time this happened a window popped up and I went through the connection process. Now when I connect, is see the spinner but sometimes the window pops up and sometimes it doesn't. That seems to indicate that it is at least supposed to automatically log you in, it just doesn't always work.

I believe most universities use BlueSocket to manage the wireless authentication page. You will need to check with your IT department to find out. I also work for a university and we do use BlueSocket. I was using the BlueSocket Application from the iTunes store to auto authenticate me on our campus WIFI. It was working great. But now this AutoLogin thing is stopping it from working. If I don’t authenticate on the page when that login page slides up it disconnects from the access point. So I can’t launch the BlueSocket APP. Does anyone know how to turn the OS3.0 Wi-Fi Auto Login feature off? I tried turning the Auto-join off but that just disconnects me from the access point.

Ditto to the others.

On the old OS, when I connected to the enterprise wifi, using Bluesocket, I could connect to the VPN to avoid entering my u/n and p/w every time. This was very handy.

With the new 3.0 OS, as soon as I connect to the wifi, the sliding window appears asking for my credentials. If I click Cancel, I am disconnected before I have a chance to start the VPN. If I click the Home button, I am disconnected before I have a chance to start the VPN. I cannot figure out how to start the VPN before the wifi is disconnected.

I've tried with auto-join on and off. But there is no different and it does not auto-join either way.

Because it's so new, our enterprise IT dept probably hasn't encountered it, much less fixed it yet.
