Sound in One Side Only

It probably is just a problem with the Headphone Jack. It's not a hardware problem because you can still get sound out of both sides by doing your aforementioned solution. You could probably be able to get it repaired/replaced. If not, then your solution seems to work fine. If you have to constantly press it down, though, then that would be an issue and I would suggest a repair/replacement.

It sounds very much as if your headset jack has gone bad, which is definitely a hardware problem. If your iPod is still under warranty, you should either send it off to Apple or take it to your nearest Apple Store. I had the headset jack on my 60gig with Video go bad while under warranty. It's a not uncommon problem as the jack gets a fair amount of stress.

If the iPod isn't under warranty, I'd check out a third party repair outfit such as iresq.com (this should in no way be considered an endorsement as I've never used them). For out of warranty repairs, they're usually cheaper than Apple.

I've done every trouble shooting thing imaginable except flushing it down the toilet but my 80G classic plays music but has a white screen so I cannot see what is going on.

I have my iPod connected to my stereo receiver, and music from the left channel stopped working. I went to the Apple Store and they did a reset via the iPod menu and this resolved my problem. That was several months ago and I have not had any further problems.

Your problem may be the jack but this might be worth a try.
