iPhone 3GS Plans

You don't have to pay AT&T anything for the voice dial feature included with the iPhone 3GS.

The unlimited data plan for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS is $30/mo, which is unlimited. Technically it is limited to 5GB per month, which would be difficult if not impossible to reach with the iPhone. The ability to download movies direct with the iPhone with firmware update 3.0 may change this.

The voice is a part of the new phone/software combo and is free, the data plan must be purchased with the AT&T voice plan. So yes it is $30 in addition to your voice plan.

Your chosen calling plan and the data plan for the iPhone have always been separate.

The unlimited data plan for the first generation iPhone costs $20/mo and includes a 200 messaging allowance. This was/is a special discounted unlimited data plan rate for the first generation iPhone that AT&T does not offer for any other phone in the smart phone category. This was/is billed separately on your monthly bill.

The unlimited data plan for the iPhone 3G and for the iPhone 3GS costs $30/mo and does not include a messaging allowance. This is AT&T's standard unlimited data plan rate for all phones in the smart phone category regardless if such a phone is a 3G phone.

This will cost you an additional $10/mo. If you don't have an additional messaging plan with your first generation iPhone, if you want the same 200 SMS allowance with the iPhone 3GS, it will cost you an additional $5/mo.

The plans are 30$ but no limit is applied for the iphone plans. They are actually unlimited. Our data connect plans however do have a 5GB limit.

That is good to know. I've never been anywhere close to 1GB in a month so if there was a 5GB limit with the iPhone, it was never anywhere close to being a problem for me.

Does anybody know about the difference in rate plans on the apple store vs the att store? The ATT online store seems cheaper.

Apple does not have a network and has no rate plans, there is only AT&T

Ya, I get that. But when you log onto the apple store to purchase an iphone w/ an ATT plan, the prices are more expensive than those listed on the ATT website.

Make sure you are looking at the iPhone rate plans on the AT&T site.

Could you be more specific? What plans are different and what cost?

AT&T's rate plans are the same regardless where you purchase the iPhone.

AT&T offers a combined unlimited data plan and messaging plan for select phones, but the iPhone isn't one of them.

The rates are the same. There are not different phone plan rates from Apple and AT&T.

What confuses me is that the rates don't seem the same. For example, with ATT you can get a family talk plan with 2 phones for 59.99 (550 mins). Then 60 bucks more for 2 IPhones and 30 more for unlimited messaging. That comes out to 149.99. On the apple store however they do not offer the 550 family talk plan, they only offer the 700 min plan which is 129.99 (including iphone data prices) and 30 bucks for messaging. That's 159.99. I don't get why apple doesn't show the same rate plans on their website as ATT does.

The 550Min FTP is a promotional plan and can be removed at any time. That is why it may not show up on the apple website.

Absolutely not. If someone tells you that you will have to pay extra, ask to speak with a manager. The only thing that may cost extra is the tethering feature which is still up in the air. Either way, the customer - you - will have a choice to pay the tethering feature or not. My personal recommendation, paying extra for the tethering is not worth it.
