switching to minimized windows

How do you open minimized windows? I've just switched from Windows to Mac. On Windows Alt+TAB cycles through all windows, but on Mac it cycles through all running apps. The minimized windows belonging to those apps--is there a key to switch to them or do I have to click on them with the mouse to bring them up?

The other poster noted that you click on their Dock icon. I seldom, if ever, use the feature. Once you sort out this issue, since you're a newcomer to the Mac, see these:

This is something Windows does much better than the Mac, since Windows lets you access minimized windows from Alt-Tab.

On the Mac, it's much harder. To get it back from the keyboard, you have to press the shortcut that sets focus to the Dock (I think this is Fn+F3, check your Keyboard system pref because I think I changed the default), then arrow key over to the icon of the minimized window, then hit Spacebar to open it. It's so much trouble doing it with the keyboard that you'll probably end up giving up, grabbing the mouse, and clicking the Dock to restore the window.

You might want to try the shareware utility Witch, because it adds an enhanced switcher shortcut that can access any window directly, including minimized windows. This would bring the flexibility of keyboard access up to the level of Windows.

Yes, I love expose. Are you saying minimizing is a windows thing because windows does it so much better? Or are you saying that Mac has eliminated the need for minimizing somehow? Do most Mac users just leave their windows open, stacked on top of each other like a desk covered with papers since expose makes it so easy to sort and choose?

Thanks for the responses everybody! This is something I love about the mac world--a real live user community!

I took a look at Witch and will definitely be trying it out soon. Very cool. In the mean time I'm loving spaces and expose, and I'm really trying to give the native OS a chance before I start with the work-arounds. There's lots to get used to after 28 years on a PC.

Thanks again! Especially N23.
