Ethernet speeds much slower than Wifi?

I have an Airport Extreme (pre dual-band) that I'm having some throughput problems with. I recently discovered that the download speed of the Ethernet ports using SpeakEasy's speed test are much slower than the wireless connection. Here's what I'm getting:

Ethernet
5,148 kbps download
1,793 kbps upload

Wireless
11,306 kbps download
1,731 kbps upload

I tested this with two Macs and a PC and the results are nearly identical. I checked my network settings and it's set to Automatic. Do I have something configured improperly or does this sound like an AE hardware failure?

First thing to check is your ethernet cables and connections. Try swapping or using one at a time to test. A poor or miswired connection will usually allow the network to run, but at significantly reduced speeds.

If you are using CAT6 cables, they are really sensitive about bend radius, etc.

It may be a bit of challenge to get at the small contacts inside the ethernet ports on your devices to check to make sure they are making good contact, but this is also a common area for connection problems.

CAT5 will work, but is considered out of date by a few years, performance wise. This could possibly explain your speed issues if high quality cabling was not used in the installation. CAT5e supports faster transfer. CAT6e will support up to Gigabit speeds.

Chances are still very good that a jack(s) is either not terminated correctly or a connection point(s) is not functioning correctly, kink in a wire (inside the wall or in the attic usually, etc.). The installers typically check a few connections very quickly and pronounce the job done without bothering to really test the system.

You will need to get an IT or prewire guy out with test equipment to troubleshoot the wiring in the home to know for sure.

I have not tested direct connections between computers, only internet connections on my network, so can't advise on how to test between Macs.

I would advise you to start a new post with subject of how to test connection speed using ethernet between Macs to see if some users can help on that front.

In the meantime, if you have a normal DSL or cable modem in your network, and a few ethernet cables handy, you could run a few tests yourself. Disconnect the computer connections from the LAN ports on the Extreme and run an outboard ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on the Extreme directly to a computer and test your ethernet connection that way. Still the same speed as before? This would indicate that the Extreme may have some issues. Faster speed connected directly? This would indicate that the structured wiring system has issues, which is what I suspect.

I have experienced a similar issue. Here is what I have found.

When I connect my computer's ethernet port directly to my cable modem, I can get speeds up to 13,000 kbps using Speakeasy's test. When I connect my AEXn, with wireless turned on, my ethernet port's speed drops to around 2,000 kbps. However, my laptop connected to the AEXn wirelessly can run SpeakEasy's test at around 11,000 kbps.

After a number of tests, I have isolated the issue to the Airport Extreme. I have only one computer and one laptop connected to the modem at a time, so excessive throughput is not an issue here. If I wasn't happy with the wireless performance of the AEXn, I would drop it from my network.
