An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly

I get the following message whenever I connect my iPhone 3G "An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again."
I have uninstalled iTunes 8.2 using Add/Remove Programs. I have hot rebooted my iPhone in the cradle with iTunes open.
iTunes seems to function normally otherwise, as does my iPhone.
I'm using the 64 bit version with Vista.

I restored my iPhone from the Settings screen last night (my Vista 64 bit Dell) when I went to sleep (says it takes two hours) and this morning it was a brick because it was wiped but iTunes couldn't connect to it to activate it. As soon as I put it in the cradle at work (Dell XPS WinXP sp2) it was recognized and activated (but without any of my settings, apps, photos, ringtones, etc.). I copied the iTunes backup file from my home computer to the same directory on my laptop at work and am now restoring from that backup. It looks like I will be completly whole again except I don't know whether or not my phone will be able to connect to iTunes at home tonight or not. I want to get this straightened out before next Wednesday, if you know what I mean.

Hmm, time for Apple to admit iTunes 8.2 has a flaw. My iPhone 3G connected with no problem under iTunes 8.1. I have gone through the full check list of things to do with no resolution. What happens if the only way to update to OS 3.0 is through iTunes 8.2? Can't update and can't connect?

The question that remains is Apple going to just stonewall the iPhone community util OS 3.0 becomes available tomorrow? How Microsoft of them.

Guys, not sure if this will help any of you, but I was having this same issue this morning, pulling my hair out trying everything.... remembered I had just updated my AV software, so paused it and reconnected iPhone - voila! All is good.
So maybe try to pause any antivirus software you're running and see if that works?
Hope it helps

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it but it didn't work. I still get the same message about detecting nut not identifying an iPhone.
I even upgraded to 3.0 on my work computer thinking that just maybe the iTunes glitch had to do with incompatibility wit the 2.21 firmware but I got the same exact message when I tried it again from home. It must be a Vista 64 bit issue.
