Please help with Canon MP980 Setup?

Hi there,

Just took my brand-new Canon Pixma MP980 out of the box and have run the setup disc but I can't complete the setup because the printer doesn't appear in the list in the Canon IJ Network Tool window.

I think the problem might be that my wireless network (I use a Linksys router, model WRT54G) isn't aware of the printer. I have no idea how to get my printer and my network to talk to each other! I've tried WPS setup... I followed the push button instructions (told the printer to "listen" and then pressed the button on the router) but it timed out. As for PIN setup, I have no idea where to enter a PIN. I am comfortable editing settings for the router if need be (192.168.1.1 etc.) Can anyone help?

Take care,

Chris

Pahu,

When I added the printer via the Canon IJ network menus, things appeared to work... the menu in the 980 now has information about my wireless network, and an IP address (starting with 192.168) and I was even able to initiate a test print with the USB cable disconnected... progress right? 🙂

However, when I try to print anything (web page, pdf), I quickly get "printer off-line" in the print queue window.

WPA with password should be fine. I'm using WPA2 with TKIP encryption with my MP980.

If the machine has acquired an IP address on the same subnet as the Mac then that indicates that you have communication between the two devices.

Did you turn off the power before disconnecting the USB cable? Even if you did, I would be inclined to turn off the power again for several seconds and then turn it back on.

If the print job still fails to go through after this, then with the printer queue open, click on Printer > Log & History (in the menu bar). This will open the cups error log which provides us with information about the print job. You should see your attempted print job and the error, indicated at the beginning of the line by a capital E. Copy the information for one or two failed jobs back here for me.

Also, with the printer queue open, click the Utility icon to open the Canon IJ Printer Utility. Change the top menu to Network and select the MP980. Now click the Network Settings tab. This will open the Canon IJ Network Tool. In the menubar, select View > Network Information. Click Copy All Information and then paste this back here also.

Hi Chris,

Looking at the two logs, it seems that you have added the printer the wrong way.

The first log from your Mac shows that it is actually connecting to the printer via Vivian's Mac, rather than connecting directly to the MP980 via wireless.

You can see this via the following entry in the first log.

New printer "Canon MP980_series___Vivian_Macdonaldb_9sMacBook"

By comparison, my connection directly from Mac to the MP980 via wireless looks like this.

New printer "MP980 series__00_00_85_ec_96_60" added by "pahu"

The second log from Vivian's Mac confirms that the printer is connected via USB, as indicated by;

Started backend /usr/libexec/cups/backend/usb

So you need to make a decision as to how you want to connect to this printer. If you want to keep it connected to Vivian's Mac via USB, then on your Mac you would add the printer via the Default browser view, not via the More Printers > Canon IJ Network.

But if you want to connect to the printer directly via wireless, which would be better because Vivian's Mac would not have to be powered on for you to print to the MP980, then you will have to disconnect it from the USB port of Vivian's Mac and then add the printer via the Canon IJ Network menu.

PaHu, many kudos and thanks! I just successfully printed from my mac. I noticed that the printer seemed to be tethered to Vivian's computer before, I've changed that at my end.

So to add it to her computer properly, it's just a matter of which pref pane button I add it through?

In any case, on my Mac I just deleted the printer from the Print & Fax pref pane, and re-added it via the Canon IJ Network menu and now it works great.

We have a linux computer that would like to share the printer as well, getting this to work is a separate headache 🙂

Jun 12, 2009 9:29 PM in response to ChrisVandergaag

Hi Chris. I have a feeling you cannot have the printer connected to one Mac via USB and another Mac via wireless. I'd have to wait until I got back to work to confirm this, but since she already has it connected via USB and I assume it is not printing, then this would confirm my thoughts.

If you wanted to get the Linux computer involved, the best setup would be to have the printer connected via Ethernet to the wireless router. Then the Mac's and Linux PC could connect without having to go via each others USB connection.
