Safarie, Camino, Opera ......ALL Crashing! What Am I Doing Wrong

Hi All,

Please Help........I have tried Safari (1.3), Opera(9.64.5270), and Camino(1.6.7) ......using each one as a browser with 10.3.9 .....

(I'm trying to upgrade from OS 9.2 on an old G4 Digital Audio tower, for use by the children for email and internet)

......and cannot get either of these browsers to stay up, ....each crashes within about 10 seconds of startup.

I've repaired Permissions, and trashed preference "PLIST" files for each of the browsers. Still no joy!

I'm connected via Ethernet cable to a 2Wire DSL modem and writing this email via my iMacG5, which is also connected to the 2Wire modem. I have no reason to suspect the modem which works fine with the iMac.

Any suggestions, set up on preferences?.....funny that each of these browsers are doing the same thing. Should I go back to OS 10.2.4 ? Safari seemed to work fine with that OS.

Thanks in advance,
BoBo

Bee,

Thanks for responding.

The crash report comes up in a pane which is a "mile long", and asks if I want to "send it to Apple".....this is what I think you are asking for?

Do you really need the entire report, OR.....the last line or two?

How do I do this?..... I can highlight the entire report, but I cannot then COPY/PASTE the crash report details, all I can do is a screen capture of the last few lines, and then somehow get the screen capture transferred to this iMac for posting on this forum.

Like I mentioned, I do not have internet or email on the G4, ....I would have to type it manually into this iMacG5 to send it to you.

The last line or two goes something like this:

0x96cb0000 - 0x96d9efff libiconv.2.dylib /usr/lib/libiconv.2.dylib
0x96ee0000 - 0x96ee8efff libbsm.dylib /usr/lib/libbsm.dylib
0x96e0000 - 0x976c6fff com.apple.WebCore 1.1 (315)/System/Library/
Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/WebCore.framework/
Versions/A/WebCore

Does this help?
Thanks,
BoBo

Thank You, Bee, for getting back to me......

I take it that the crash report sheds no light on the problem.........as I mentioned earlier in the thread, all three browsers are crashing in the same manner, ....ie, within seconds of loading the intended website. It is not just Safari, but Camino and Opera are doing the same thing. I've got a system/internet problem somewhere.

I wish I could "jump ahead" to Tiger for this old G4 which just won't quit,........ but perusing Ebay and Amazon, OS10.4 is going for anywhere from $120-290, and I don't want to spend any more money on this problem.

I will instead, try going backwards and loading OS10.2.4

Thank you again for your help,

BoBo

Bobo --
The only browser I remember working that far back (9.2) was Internet explorer.
And the version that worked is obsolete.
The three you mentioned probably did work i 10.3.9 (Panther).

OS 10.2.4 is just pre-Jaguar, I believe.
But it is better than 9.2.

To answer your other question, the last lines of a crash report
really don't mean anything . . . It's the ones say, 1-20 lines from the TOP of the report.
But your problem really revolves around your OS.

All the best to you . . .
I have an old flat panel iMac (dome) that I really love.
And it won't quit either. It's on Tiger (10.4) and just chugs away.

Press command+c to copy the text after selecting it.

In my opinion, rolling back to a previous version of the OS to get a browser working seems a tad drastic 🙂 There's likely a simple fix for your current problems, so post the crash report if you can.

Hi ~Bee,

I may be mistaken, but I thought he had already upgraded to 10.3.9 and was having problems on there. From the original post:

Bobo, can you clarify what you are currently running at the moment? 🙂

For Bee and iBod,

Thank you for your interest and help trying to solve my problem.

I no longer have the original crash report Safari 1.3.2 when operating with OS 10.3.9

I decided to give up, and erase the G4 hard drive. I then reinstalled 10.3.2 and have had no problems with Safari; ....and I have no intentions to upgrade to 10.3.9 which started all my Safari crash problems.

This is NOT what I wanted to do, but at least it's running and I have internet access. What a couple of weeks of frustration this has been!

Meanwhile, I intend to keep looking around for a cheap price for Tiger. This G4 has been with me for almost 10 years and it deserves better.

Thanks again,
BoBo

Hi Bobo,

and I have no intentions to upgrade to 10.3.9 which started all my Safari crash problems

10.3.9 has many security and bugs fixes over 10.3.2. I'd still recommend you upgrade. The problems you encountered with the browsers will have been due to a different issue (I'm fairly certain). In all my time running 10.3.9 I had no issues with Camino or Safari.
