Converting from mp2 to mp3

Have songs in my pod that came from cd's.
They are not in mp3 format.
Need to change this and sync them back to pod
so I then can put them in my car stereo.
Went to edit, preferences, and was looking for
change import file to mp3.
Was then going to go back to library and select all
music and re sync them to pod,
TIA, Craig.

If you are using iTunes 8 go to Edit>Preferences>General and click on the Import Settings button. Change your Import format to MP3 Encoder and choose the Setting or "bit rate" you want.

If you want to convert files in your iTunes library to MP3 (they have to be in your library, you can't convert songs on the iPod) go back to your library and highlight the songs you want to convert and go to the Advanced menu at the top of your iTunes window and choose "Create MP3 version": iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format

Converting creates a second copy of the song in the format you have chosen which gives you the opportunity to either keep or delete the original.

If a song is already in your iTunes library, you can change it to MP3 by resetting your import preference and then using the command Advanced > Create MP3 Version.

If the song is in a format incompatible with iTunes, you cannot put it into your iTunes library. You need to use some other program, such as Switch to convert it to MO3, and then add those MP3s to you library. Or, if you still have the CDs, you can rerip.
