How to change default video player?

Hi,

How do I change the default video player from Quick Time to Windows Media Player? I've tried:
- selecting a file > Get Info > Open With > selecting Windows Media Player
- going into System Prefs > Quick Time > Advanced > Mime Settings > unchecking the boxes I don't want QT to play
- a dozen other things suggested on forums!

Thanks,
Andrew

What are the dozen other things? Not much point us all going over old ground here 🙂

Hi,

The other things I've tried are ones I've read on forums found through Google searches. I can't remember the path I followed for them all – they were obscure and unhelpful. Some were suggestions that I didn't try. To give you an idea, one person suggested a solution that involved re-writing code. That kind of thing sounds a bit to whacky for what I thought would be a simple changing of preferences.

The ones I've actually tried (mentioned in my first post) ultimately had no effect. Do you know of a simple way to just get movies to open in Windows Media Player rather than Quick Time?

Hi,

I might be using the wrong terminology. Before downloading the latest version of Safari (4.0), the vast majority of movies on websites would open using WMP and others would open using Quick Time. Now, all movies are opening in Quick Time.

OK, I'm not really sure what player the movie is opening in (WMP or Quick Time) because clicking on the movie file in a website does not open an application, it just plays. However, the look of QT is distinctive, and now all movies are looking like that.

The main problem I have with QT is that it takes a longer time to buffer, and you can't play the movie until the buffering process is pretty far progressed, or even completed. WMP allows you to play the movie while it's buffering, saving heaps of time. Again, I might be using the wrong terminology. I just meant that you can play a movie easier in WMP than QT.

Hope that makes more sense now.
