Canon XH A1s capture issues

I just bought a new Canon XH A1s and Final Cut Studio. First test capture failed,and started reading the forums. I can see I am not the only one. I call Apple and were helpful but, no resolution. I have tried My new 8 Core, and Laptop pro, different Firewire cables in every combination and bought have the same issues. Can't communicate with the device. I am up to date on all patches and have reinstalled QuickTime. Apple says it is a Canon issue, but reading all the forums I don't think that is it. Does anyone have this camera working in either combination that would talk to me over the phone or email to help me resolve this issue. Please help....

8 Core, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Canon cameras have always been problematic.

Read through the posts, the whole sordid list of unnatural solutions are probably spelled out.

Here's what you want to have your settings on in the audio/video settings in Final Cut Pro. (I also have a Canon XH-A1 but not the s) Capture Preset: HDV (pretty much any of the HDV Pro Res 422, HDV Pro Res 422 (HQ), or the HDV Apple Intermediate Codecs will do. That being dependent on what you want for a capture preset) Device control preset: HDV Firewire basic. Hope this helped!

Anyone know of a Firewire monitoring software. So far I can tell if my XH A1s is talking to the firewaire port

System Profiler. If it shows up there, your computer is recognizing the cam.

Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > FireWire.

or, Applications / Utilities > System Profiler > FireWire.

Hi, I agree with FilmCut 4.5 as to the settings. What I found worked was getting set to Capture with putting in the "name" on screen, then turning the camera on with Play and then starting the Capture begin on screen. Trying to get FCP to work the "Device Control" on Canon didn't work. It would start the camera, but on screen it would show a black screen and "cueing cam.." although on my cam monitor the film was playing. But by starting the camera in play mode just before clicking the capturing start on mac, did work. Still no camera control, but at least full capture. ciao for now, d
