Logic Pro 8 (not responding) ? Force Quit not responding

Can anyone explain this phenomenon which happens regularly now on my computer:

1 - Boot up computer from completely off and double click LP8 in the dock, no other applications running

2 - L8 goes through a few of the start up features and then hangs completely

3 - Force Quit window shows (Logic Pro not responding)

4 - Executing Force Quit fails - in other words not even Force Quit can make LP8 quit

5- Have to log out/reboot a few times before it finally works

I dont know of any other Application that succeeds in resisting Force Quit in this way

All diagnoses gratefully considered

thanks in advance

I had this happen with my old Interface and it was due to the fact that the Midi Driver hang itself up when booting Logic. So open your Activity monitor and check what's going on whilst booting Logic. There might be other threads not responding and then you'll know what the problem might be.
If it is the Midi Driver double click on it and force quit that for a try.
Also the best method to force quit Logic is via the Finder, that always worked for me.

When do you click Logic? Right after the desktop appears? What happens if you open Logic ± 2 minutes after startup? (I am thinking of some unfinished background process like Spotlight indexing may collide with a quick Logic launch)

2 - L8 goes through a few of the start up features and then hangs completely

At what feature does it stop?

3 - Force Quit window shows (Logic Pro not responding)

4 - Executing Force Quit fails - in other words not even Force Quit can make LP8 quit

Also via the keycombo ⌥⌘-esc?

SampleC ... many thanks .. deep Mac knowledge !

I never knew the Activity Monitor existed. Here is what I discovered so far:

• there is a Process ID 753 called * MOTUFireWireCons 1.08 MB 586.61 MB Intel *

I tried Quitting this as per the Activity Monitor Help Manual but it does not quit. The problem being I used to have a Motu896MkIII and now have a Mackie Onyx 1220 with inbuilt F/W interface.. which has given me problems ever since I started using it. The audio simply isnt available when I boot up Logic - this happens often enough to be a complete pain, but not enough for me to be unable to work at the moment as I am not doing audio intensive projects, more Arranging/Scoring etc

My question on this is how do I get rid of it? Surely it is distracting the Mackie Driver? And it may be the cause of the problem

As to the other suggestions I will try them when I boot up again .. in full workflow at the moment

Many thanks as well Erik - in answer to your questions:

• Yes perhaps I need to wait a few minutes before loading Logic. Could well be impatience that causes this hang..

• It is impossible to tell what feature it stops at because the Logic windows of the start 'loading drivers etc' spin by so fast.. suffice to say that it is often at quite an advanced stage that everything stops

• I usually use the KC you describe to Force quit... interesting that quitting from the Finder is suggested as more reliable

will try out suggestions
