My MacBook is a couple years old and the battery might need replacing, but after about an hour of use - many times less than an hour - the computer just shuts downs without any warning at all. Is this a battery problem or a OS problem?
You've actually suggested solutions on this same problem, but since they did not work, I thought I coming at it from another angle it might help.

I think I've reset the SMC for 15" MacBook. I found many different way to to do it and hopefully chose the one for the 15" MacBook.. I also did the battery update 1.3 awhile ago but just saw that was for MacBook Pro's, so I just did the 1.2 update. I have another 1.5 hours to re-charge the battery fully to see if this worked. Thanks for your quick answers/suggestions today.
1) Shut down the computer
2) Remove battery & MagSafe adapter
3) hold down power button for at least 5 seconds
4) reconnect battery & adapter
If you find your computer is still having issues, what you want to do is try your battery in another MacBook and/or try a known-good battery in your machine. The folks at an Apple store would be happy to help with this.
Thanks, but just to clarify, I take out the battery and unplug the power cord, then hold the power button down for 5 seconds even though nothing will happen because there is no power source? If no ones told you today, you rock.
You remove the battery & power adapter to prevent the machine from powering on--that's the whole point. Here's Apple's article about it:

My computer shuts down without warning with battery power still available. I have tried removing the battery and power cord and holding the power button for 5 seconds. It happened again with 50% left. Here is the info:Battery Information:
