Airport Base Station configuration problems

I have an airport extreme base station that I am trying to add to an existing network to use to share a hard drive wirelessly. When I run the latest version of airport utility on my macbook pro it sees the base station, it sees my existing network and it lets me go through all the steps until the very end when it begins to write the configuration. It then fails and tells me an error has occurred while updating (-6737) and to try using an ethernet cable. No luck with the ethernet cable either. Then, I tried using my old g4 powerbook that barely functions anymore and was able to use a very old version of Airport Setup Assistant to easily set up the network as a stand-alone network. I was able to join the network and access the shared hard drive without any problem on my Macbook pro. When I try via powerbook to change the settings so that the Airport Extreme simply joins the network I get a confirmation that it worked, but no longer see it as the list of devices I can connect to. I've unplugged it and plugged it back in, etc, but it's gone. I know that I could use it with the modem to make a wireless network that way and avoid having to have it join an existing network, but I bought it for the purpose of wirelessly sharing the hard drive and printer and don't want to move those devices to where the modem is.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Alan

I thought you might be interested to know that I had been trying for several hours today to configure an AirPort Extreme base station but kept hitting the "-6737 error" until I reverted to an older version of the AirPort Utility.
I bought an AirPort Extreme base station in February 2008 but only recently unpacked it as I didn't manage to obtain a Broadband connection until 23rd June this year. I am running Mac OS X (v. 10.5.7) on my IMAC 24/SD.
When I ran the AirPort Utility (v. 5.4.2), it let me go through all the steps until the very end when it began to write the configuration. It then failed and told me that an error (-6737) had occurred while updating the configuration and to close the configuration window and try again. I tried over and over again with different parameters but the result was always the same. {There was a warning message every time I tried that the firmware would need updating but I couldn't do this until I had configured the AirPort Extreme base station to connect to the internet.}
Eventually, I decided to use Apple's Time Machine to restore the oldest version of the AirPort Utility that I could find (v. 5.3.1) and this worked first time! {Also there was no warning message this time that the firmware would need updating.}
I conclude that the AirPort Utility (v. 5.4.2) is not compatible with my AirPort Extreme base station's firmware but that the AirPort Utility (v. 5.3.1) is compatible. {The AirPort Utility (v. 5.4.2) tells me that my AirPort Extreme base station's firmware is v. 7.2.1 and that it needs updating to v. 7.4.2.}
