Fighting Print Services, LPR works, IPP does not

I have opened both IPP and LPR on the firewall. I have started Print Services, created a queue and opened it for IPP and LPR+Bonjour. On the client, I can create printers for both, but while LPR (LPD) works fine, IPP does not work at all, most of the time. At one point I had an IPP-setup working, but every job first got a 60sec wait (timeout of sorts) after which the job would be printed on the server.

This printer used to be connected to a client and shared from there. Easy. But with the printer attached to the server running 10.5.7, it has been a nightmare.

Using IPP should give the clients more information about the printer/queue, so I'd like that.

Also, I tried adding the queue to Open Directory, but the manual says (#7)

7 In the attribute list, select RecordName (with “untitiled_1” next to it) and click Edit.

and it does not make sense. There is no RecordName, there is no Edit. I got there later when I checked some checkboxes in Options, first. But then I got stuck on #12

12 If you want to specify the printer model, click New Attribute, choose Printer Type from
the pop-up menu, enter the model name, and click OK.

There is no popup menu, or there is one, but it only shows something like <native>.

I removed the Record in OD.

So, back to my question: how do I get IPP working?
