MythTV backend with MySQL, EyeConnect or...

I want to try MythTV and to do that I need to install a UPnP server. The literature recommends MySQL. I downloaded the 32 bit version (for use with an Intel iMac) and installed it. So far so good. To get it working with MythTV the instructions are:

1. cd /usr/local/mysql/bin/
2. shell> ./mysql -uroot

This is as far as I get. The response to step 2 is 'Permission Denied'. I then found a posting that said I need to first do: chmod u+rwx ./mysql. I did that, but no luck. As you can tell I have no idea what I am doing. My ultimate goal is to install the MythTV backend. It doesn't matter to me if the UPnP server is MySQL or something else as long as there are instructions for marrying the two. I have EyeConnect running on the computer, but MythTV says it can't log into it. I've seen Linux distributions of MythTV that automatically installed MySQL and MythTV, but haven't found anything like that for the Mac.

Try shell> ./mysql -u root

And I have no idea what "literature" you are talking about, but MySQL and UPnP are in no way connected at all. One supports Plug and Play for hardware decides, while the other is database software. Not sure how they were being connected.

Yes, I can see where I made my error. My guess is that MythTV backend is the UPnP server and it isn't running because it hasn't been completely installed. The installation is incomplete since the database hasn't been built via MySQL. Anyway, after thinking more about this, it would appear that MythTV really isn't for people with my skill set... which is about nil. I think I'll abandon this project before I do some real damage. Hopefully I can find away of uninstalling MySQL. Thanks for bringing me back to reality!
