MacBook freezes when opening lid

Hey guys,

I figured I'd try here before making a genius appointment. When I close the lid on my MacBook to put it to sleep, whenever I reopen the lid it freezes. I get an all black screen, and the fan kicks on to high speed. The only thing I can do is hold the power button down and restart the computer. All the keys are non responsive, and the login window that used to pop up never displays. It's almost like the display doesn't even turn back on, it just stays dark. Any suggestions???

Some have been successful with changes to the networking in avoiding the problem.
I have been successful with just putting it to sleep before closing the lid.
The problem started a month ago (for most) with the arrival of 10.5.7.
I went back to 10.5.6 but the problem was there, where it was not when I started.
So try network change, or be sure to sleep, or just hope Apple will cure this by 10.6 in Sept.
There are numerous thread on this topic.

I've been having the same problem. Once it goes to the black screen, the only option is to restart the computer by holding down the power button. Usually, if it isn't plugged into the power source, the computer will come out of sleep and drain the battery until the battery is dead.

Ok, not sure if this will help, but i tried to remember what i did since this problem started creeping up yesterday. I had read an article on Macworld.com about network settings for different locations. WHile using one of their tips, I made my home location so that airport is the only service active (meaning I inactivated ethernet, firewire, & bluetooth). I noticed the problem after that. So I made those service active again, and the problem didn't occur with me opening and closing the lid about 20 times.

So I then made them inactive again, and the problem popped up right away.

I have now made them again all active, and the problem is gone.

Not sure why this is having an affect, but maybe someone with more experience could chime in??
