converting .wps to .doc

I have several .wps files that I transferred over from a pc. What do I open them with? Do I need to download a converter? If I need a converter where do I get a Free one (not a trial)? The microsoft website has only converters for Windows, and I don't want to download OpenOffice when I have microsoft Office.

mac osx, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

Are you SURE Word won't open it? This is cut and pasted from Words help file:

Open a file that is in a different format
Word provides file format converters to open files that were created in other applications. These converters are installed with Word.
On the File menu, click Open.
On the Enable pop-up menu, click the file type that you want to open.
File types sometimes become unavailable. If you don't see the file type, or if you don't know the file type, click All Documents.
Locate the document that you want to open, and then double-click it.
Note
Because Word must convert the file to open it, some changes might occur in the document's formatting, graphics, and fonts.
