I have a 1st Generation iPhone with OS 3.0 installed, on an O2 Pay Monthly Contract... I was having the same problem but I have now fixed it...

If anyone from the UK is having this problem then here’s how to fix it:

You will need to go to - Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network...

Under ‘Cellular Data’ you will see that ‘APN’ says ‘idata.o2.co.uk’... If you are on Pay & Go then ‘APN’ needs to read ‘payandgo.o2.co.uk’ or if you are Pay Monthly then ‘APN’ needs to read ‘mobile.o2.co.uk’... There is no need to change either ‘username’ or ‘password’... Also you can leave the ‘Visual Voicemail’ settings as they are...

This should hopefully fix it for you too... If it doesn’t work then try switching ‘payandgo.o2.co.uk’ for ‘mobile.o2.co.uk’ or vice versa...

For those of you elsewhere in the world: The only suggestion I have for your problem is either; ring your provider to ask them for the correct ‘APN’ or ask someone you know who has an iPhone for their settings, providing they haven’t upgraded to OS 3.0 of course!!!

i had this issues as well, it was a case that i had a data package only and this new software somehow alerts ATT that you don't have a qualifying Data and voice package. They have to either turn yours back on if you had both already or you have to sign up for a voice plan if you've been using your iPhone for data only and paying per use if you used the phone or text. Its an unnecessary hassle but ATT is again going after all the money. If you have more than 1 ATT phone activated, be sure to ask about the family plan that will allow you to share minutes with the other phone(s) on your plan. in my case since i have a Verizon blackberry that i use for voice, my other ATT phone gained 50 minutes/mo and it only cost me $9.99 for my iPhone voice to share the 1400 minutes with the other ATT phone which came out to save me $10 from what i was paying already. With this option, i'll be using apps to do all texting but incoming texts and SMS are all free free.

I had the same problem and error message after updating to 3.0. Full bars, but no 3G in upper left corner of phone. I tried resetting the network, no fix. I spent an hour on the phone with AT&T who were stuck. Finally, a guy from Tech Support at AT&T removed me from AT&T's network, had me remove my sim card, placed me back on the network and then I reinserted my sim. After a minute of searching- I was good to go. For now...

I have a 3G that I purchased in Australia (where I live) that I was using with the AT&T Go phone plan + 19.99 for data while visiting the States this month. I got this message when I upgraded to 3.0 as well. I called AT&T this morning and was told by technical support that you can no longer have a data feature with a Go phone plan on an iPhone, and they embedded this knocking off the data to screen out people. I had to get the rep to refund my data feature $$, and can now no longer use data while I'm here! 😟

Hi, just had the same problem after installing 3.0 on my 3 G iphone "Could not activate cellular data: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service." So I phoned up O2 and they advised the to change the two APN's by entering the following.
Go into General > General> Cellular Data Network > APN and enter mobile.o2.co.uk .
Go into General > General> MMS > APN and enter wap.o2.co.uk
Both APN were previously idata.02.co.uk which was right for previous OS.
Hope this helps you and other?

Hello all,

I'm a United Kingdom o2 user and I've just remedied my "could not activate cellular data network" problem after viewing this forum.

I had upgraded my 3g i-phone using the apple store as an app I wanted needed it. After that I could not use safari even though I could use the downloaded apps. I used the wonderful advice posted on this forum and it worked. If any of you need it this is the advice I followed:

"You will need to go to - Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network...

Also you can leave the ‘Visual Voicemail’ settings as they are..."

After all this do not touch the reset button otherwise you go back to the 'idata.o2.co.uk' setting....just use the back arrow at the top left of the page and all is gr8!!!

Thanks so much. This must have been good advice as I'm a technophobe, but my saving grace is I'm willing to google!!

Cheers,
Cara.
