Original iPhone 3.0 upgrade - No battery life and running warm to hot

I upgraded my original iPhone to 5.0 with no problems. After playing around with some of the new features I noticed that my iPhone was hot to the touch. I left it alone for a while in standby and it was still warm. I turned off "Find My iPhone" thinking it had something to do with running hot, it made no difference. I also noticed my battery life is shot. At 4:30 I had a full charge and only used the phone once. It has been in standby mode since that call, it is now 8:20 and I am down to 10%. Something is running that is killing my battery. Anyone else experience this problem?
Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problems - my iPhone is running much warmer than it used to, and the battery life has greatly diminished. I want to know what Apple is going to do for us first gen iPhone owners.

It is obviously a problem with the first iPhone, and I for one want to know what the solution is going to be on Apple's part.

Well, either a reset or a shutdown should kill whatever is running. So try that first.

Then start paying lots of attention to what apps, etc, you use, so that you have a chance of figuring out what might cause it if it happens again.

Might test whether it could be Push Notifications--try turning them on and off and seeing if you can trigger the issue.

Yes, I tried restarting and it didn't make a difference. I also forgot to mention that it seems sluggish after the upgrade and it takes a long time to connect to the AT&T network. I had push running in previous OS but will shut it off and recharge and see what happens. I hope Apple is monitoring these issues.

My is original bought on first day 2 years ago (waited on line while on vacation). I am charging in now, once charged I will leave it in standby mode as I do every night and see what happens in the morning. If it is dead then I will charge and do a reset.
Thanks for your feedback.

I just noticed my typo. I meant 3.0 not 5.0. Can't edit post since I created it more than 15 minutes ago.

Thank heavens I'm not alone. I thought I was going mad. My iPhone 3G burns hot now, and it won't charge higher than it's current charge value.

Before I upgraded to 3.0 it was running cool, and the battery ran really well.

However, in the past, 3G and Wifi simultaneously running would give exactly the same problem (PdaNet). This time I've gone into Airplane Mode, and STILL nothing. No charge.

Hope Apple figures this one out before we all end up with a pile of bricks.

I think I'm experiencing the same problem. Everything is sluggish after the upgrade: scrolling, the home screen, and especially 3d games, the framerate gets terribly choppy. This never happened before with 2.2.1. I've restarted the phone, restored it in iTunes, nothing seems to help.

I've unchecked everything under Settings > General > Search Results thinking it could be a Spotlight indexing problem, but it hasn't made a difference. This is maddening, hope someone figures this out soon!

My original iPhone has also been a lot hotter since the update. I noticed my speakers also picked up a continuous low power signal from the phone ALL the time. Rather than only when a text was due or a call was coming.

Disabled Push Mail, Contacts etc and it stopped, got cooler. Just reapplied the MobileMe settings, back comes the feedback and the temperature. Just Erased and Restored and it seems to have again done nothing to kick the new habit. This is not good at all, continuous processes going on and the excessive heat will no doubt kill the battery and kill the phone.... not to mention having my phone in my room drives me crazy, all that feedback!!!!!

Love the update but NOT at the expense of my sanity (buying new speakers I don't think so) nor my phones life expectancy

Yep, Same problem here, went to bed last night with phone fully charged, alarm goes of this morning and the battery is almost depleted. Put it on charge for an hour and then took it to work with me thinking I'll charge it fully when I get home, noticed however that the phone was very warm, never had that before.

Checked the phone perhaps an hour or two later and the battery was exhausted, no charge whatsoever.

I'm at home now and the computer has finally recognised it and is charging. I've decided to remove all applications and replace them gradually. I also used the find my iPhone sevice last night (had to give it a go!), I wonder if that may be the problem?

I also have this problem.

Last night I upgraded to 3.0, played with it a little and the battery was already drained off.
After a full night of charge, today I felt it was kinda hot and at lunch the battery was at 20% (doing nothing).

I turned off Push and Location service and I hope this will solve the problem for now.
Seems like the iPhone is processing some heavy stuff continuously.

I upgraded a few days ago. Battery life was horid on the first day of use. I left the wifi on so that it would auto connect to my networks at home, office and around town. Battery was toast in less than 24 hr and I noticed that the phone was warmer than usual.
After recharging, I turned off wifi and only turned it on when I was actually using it. Phone stayed cool, been using it for 24 hrs and battery is at around 50%. I think it's the wifi....
