Battery % indicator on iPhone 3G

Hi. I have a 16GB iPhone 3G and I just upgraded the firmware to OS 3.0 now. One thing new about the firmware is the battery indicator with a ##% next to the graphical representation. How do I turn that on?

..And please don't tell me this is one of those stupid 3GS-only features that 3G can totally have (such as voice commands).

Engadget reviews iPhone 3G and 3GS side-by-side, and both phones have battery % indicator:

I have a Iphone 3G With the 3.0 OS and i have the Battery Life indicator ##% and the Battery icon. A Co-worker JUST updated his with the same thing as the results. My Befst fridns phone which he had replaced yesterday due to the dead battery, did the update and has no ##%. We called apple and they said its a 3GS only feature but for some reason some phones have it enabled. They tried to tell me i had a 3rd party app installed or it was jailbroken... funny how its brand new and the OS was JUST updated... Rearded apple! Cant figure out why our stuff doesnt work right so lets blame the users!!! Starting to sound like M$ This is a screen shot of mine i just took.

What is wrong with Apple? They released the 3G with everything the original had except they implemented new hardware (GPS, 3G Radio) and enabled the software to do the same thing. With 3GS, they're screwing all of us.

It's BS that the 3G can't video record, have voice recog, and battery % indicator. Apple is slowly becoming a greedy company.

I just got a new unibody MBP and it isn't the same quality as the old ones. The keys wear out so easily and the display hinge can't be held above 60 degrees or it falls. What the heck?

I've been wondering about this too after I installed 3.0. I was expecting to see the % indicator but no where I could find the option to turn this on or not. Or do we have to fully charge the iphone to see this?

Needless to say, I'm pretty much disappointed in Apple about the 3.0. I don't mind the video recording/editing feature cuz iphone 3G (second Gen) does not have that capability so I can understand that. But as for the % indicator, it should be on 3G as well I mean when they announced about the 3.0, they said many new features will come out, which that should include for 3G as well. But seeing that % indicator is only for 3G S is very disappointing. I actually don't mind about it because I do have the app called Free Memory and it does tell me how much % i have left in battery. But that can be a pain to keep going to that app to check my %.

Also I don't really mind because I always charge my phone when I sleep but would be nice if Apple did add that onto 3G so that I can just look at the % right off. But overall i'm still disappointed in them for not keeping up their promises.

Why? Apple never announced anything about it.

What promises? They never even announced there would be a battery percentage for the 3G S. Let me see, you're getting copy/paste, landscape keyboard, MMS, push notifications, (and many other new features), and you're "disappointed" about not having battery percentage - something you yourself stated you "don't really mind."

the lack of a % indicator on the 3G is pretty silly, but you have to consider the possibility (and the likelyhood) that the CPU in the 3G and original iphone may not provide users with smooth performance while recording video, editing video, and may not have the processing power to quickly process voice commands.

Sure there are apps that do just voice dialing, but the 3GS quickly pulls up whatever you're telling it to do from the entire ipod library and contacts.

I have a freshly formatted/restored or whatever you want to call it 16gb 3G, and compared to my friends 3Gs, i can see a very noticable difference in things as simple as scrolling the home page icons, the contacts, and a pretty big difference in other areas. The framerates are all higher. I never really noticed it before until i saw it nexted to the 3GS. The 3GS also NEVER stutters, but even having just been restored my 3G has that occasional hiccup.

They still could have added it but it might not of worked well. Theres also the concept of business. Apple's (and any other successful business') Number One will always be making a profit.
