DVD 8X or 4X?

I have to assume 8X will burn faster than 4X, but some family members I have given family DVD's to claim their player only reads the ones burned on 4X. Is that because they do not have a progressive DVD player or what? I personally have had problems with sound on older DVD players of my own. Or is it because some were burned on Maxell and some on Memorex. Any info will be appreciated.

I burn Verbatim DVD-R 1-8X at 4X speed.

Memorex and TDK have bad track records here. My Apple 4X check out as Maxell. Haven't bought Apple's for some time. I'm using white inkjet printable and I haven't seen Apple selling those...

BTW, I have no complaints. Some players older than 2 years may not have DVD-R as a format they can play. Some may play them, like the 5-year-old Sony I gave to my neighbor. It won't play CD-R though.

You might fine this of interest:

My reliable DVD-Rs have been: Apple 4X (Maxell ID), RiTek 4X; Verbatim 1-8X, RiData 8X, and PioData 8X, all white inkjet printable. The RiData and PioData checked out to be RiTek-made.

Verbatim is reliable and can be found in many stores in the USA. They even make a special grade for medical records.

You can buy the RiTek, RiData, and PioData at:

Verbatim may be available in your neighborhood store or:
http://www.taperesources.com/
http://www.newegg.com/

Apple brand can be purchased from the Apple online store.

You can check the manufacturer's ID by using DVD Media Inspector: http://homepage.mac.com/raktajino/dvdmediainspector/dvdmediainspector.html

You could wade through this: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia

From that database: Five brands and who actually manufactures the DVDs:
TDK = TDK, RITEKG04, RICOHJPN, MXL, CMC, MCC
Memorex = CMC, RICOHJPN, PRODISC, INFODISC
Imation = CMC, MCC, Ritek, Prodisc
Sony = MCC 01RG20, Sony04D1, TYG01
Fuji = FUJIFILM02..4X, FUJIFILM03..8X, ProdiscF01..8x, ProdiscS03..4x, PVC001001..2x, RITEKG03..1x, TAIYOYUDEN..2x, TYG01..4x, TYG02..8x

This can result in "mixed" experiences...

My friend used TDK on his Mac and it wouldn't play in his 5 year old Sony DVD player. All of mine play OK in his "antique" Sony. Update: He finally gave up on that antique and bought a Sony DVPNS775V http://ww1.onecall.com/PID_22332.htm which also plays double-layer DVD+R.

Thanks Len, judging from your and other posts I will use Verbatim DVD's. I did have what maybe called coasters using Maxell. I had 4 in a row that said to insert a disk, in others words they could not be recognized by the burner. The way I found this out was I inserted a Memorex and it worked fine, so I inserted 4 Maxell until it worked ok and has worked ok since. I did try to use the 4 Maxell coasters again and they would not work so I through them away. Verbatim for me!!!
