3.0 Cool, but a memory hog on my 3G...

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone else has noticed that 3.0 chews through memory fast. I use the Free Memory App and I have been down to 2MB many times since I installed with it only being up for a couple of hrs.....it used to take a week to bleed down that much.

I also notice that it seems to run a little slower than before, rather than faster as claimed.

Don't get me wrong, I love the new features, I just wish my memory wouldn't be gobbled so aggresively or if there was a way to use virtual memory.

Anyone else?

I find the benefits of 3.0 are great but I've also found that about 15% of apps that I'd loaded that worked fine on 2.x do not work or are serious memory-hogs on 3.0.

I've put them into 'quarantine' pending updates and if they're not updated soon then they'll be removed until their 'Read-me' says '3.0' IS supported......

I'm not upset with Apple because Apple notified developers well in advance that they should update and check compatibility of their apps but I AM upset with low-grade smart-a *** developers who think that they're on the road to riches with no effort required!

I am having the same problem. It looks like the cell phone software is always resident. If you use email, the that gets resident, same if you follow that with Safari. Then your memory goes downhill from there. Apple gives you about 30 to 40 megabytes of RAM in which to run applications on the iPhone 3G, but the 3GS gives you double that. That's why we are having this problem. Get MemoryInfo, I am upgrading from "Freememory", because MemoryInfo seems to be a better program. I will post more info once I've tried it. Also, the way to terminate an application has changed from 2.x to 3.0 of the iPhone OS, you hold down the sleep/wake button, then press and the home button to terminate the application that is currently running in memory. (The old way in 2.x was to hold down the home button while in an app to terminate it.) I'm going to my Apple store to complain to the Genius's. Best of luck. Phil B

I am having the same problem as described by Phil and others on this thread. Freememory reports 2MB or less free memory frequently which was not the case with v2 software. I have many apps, but I run only a few regularly and even if I run only the Apple apps after a power cycle, the memory goes downhill. I don't think it is an issue with 3rd party apps as I find this issue without running them.

I doubt if Phil would learn anything new from the Genius's at the Apple bar. Have talked to a few in my earlier visits and their skill level is for teaching basic computer usage to my grandma.
