Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

For my two pennyworth I have the same problem and I believe that the 3.0 upgrade has killed my wifi and bluetooth. What is more, my partner has a brand new 3Gs and she was at a friends and found that on their network she had the same hokey cokey wifi (in and out). We are going to test over this weekend by trying a number of networks, if the problem persist they are getting the phone back on the 14 day returns policy.
This is plain wrong, two expensive O2 contracts on two iphones and all the other apple products we have show our faith in and loyalty to the brand, but it will wear thin very fast if this is not sorted in 3.1, and very quickly.

I have the problem with my wifi and GSM signal too.
When I updated to 3.0, GSM Network was always going to search loop and after 100 times of reset network settings I finally got GSM to work but if I turn airplane mode or restart my iphone I will need to make another 100 times of reseting my network settings to get it to work again!! My wifi after 3.0 update was working somehow at the beginning (COULD find my wifi network and COULD connect to that network but it will disconnect after few minutes) but now I can't even detect my wifi network with my iphone, wifi is totally DEAD now!! At the beginning I could't turn on my BT, it simply didn't wan't to turn on, I click on BT switch and it was seems like turning on but then it will get back to off position, now I can turn ON bluetooth but my bluetooth can't find any device just like my wifi, BT is dead too.

It will be great if Apple would at least answer to these posts that people are posting and tell us what to do, what is the problem?? To wait another update?? To send it to warranty?? I'm from Croatia just like Davor Pasaric and I can't wait 4 weeks for another iphone!!! And what if I get a new iphone that will after update work just like this one??? wait for more 4 weeks for another one!!?? Apple please RESPOND!!!

I am loyal to Apple, but what apple is doing in the last year or two is just not right!! I have a MBP too, Im not a gamer, but I have tried to play games a few times and I did get BLACK SCREEN few times in games and I know what was about (Im not a n00b in computers) it was overheating until I didn't manually put my fans to 6k-7k RPM when I was gaming. And apple have not commented on that too!!
How can a computer that costs 2500$ overheat like that?? Sure, its great computer, BUT it seems like apple is going wrong way, they selling stuff that is not tested like it should be! And I am very very angry about and belive me I am not the only one!!

Ditto on this annoying problem. After 3.0 upgrade (and never before) my iPhone 3G couldn't find my home wifi signal. The only fix, and it's completely temporary, is to reset the network settings and then re-enter the network name and password manually. Then, after a while, on its own, the phone drops the wifi connection and is unable to re-establish until I go through these steps again.

Is it absolutely confirmed that Apple is aware of this problem and is working on a fix? Is there anywhere on the Apple site where they admit there's a problem and they're working on it?

Thanks.

I thought I was the only one! After the OS 3.0 upgrade, even though my settings for Wifi is still the same and set to "auto-join network", the window that asks me to select a network (1 available!) to join keeps popping up. It has never done that before as it just remembers my password for that particular network.

Even worse, after all the fuss, I can't join ANY wifi network - it justs says "Unable to join XXX network"!!

Reboot the iPhone numerous times - no luck.

Oh and the reception is definitely worse than before with longer start-up times as well.

I posted way back that it was only a WPA issue for me. Hoping to figure out what the issue is and how to work around, I have been reading each and every response.

Since ... I've heard little more than rants about "Are you listening Apple" this and "Customer service is horrible" that. Enough! I'm so sick of all the rants with no details on the problems you're seeing.

If you post a note that your wifi doesn't work, it would help everyone if you'd be specific about what type of wifi you have tested it with, WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc., also, make and model of the wifi equipment.

Ok, I'm done ranting about rants ...

ptbeatle your comments are not constructive at all however to entertain your requests I think there is 2 issues with wifi that I have seen constantly with the 3.0 update

1. The Wifi icon is totally greyed out in the settings= either the phone no longer detects its own marvell wifi chip or the chip burned out from the update
2. The wifi icon is there but attempting to connect to any network no matter what sort of factory reset procedure, router reset, trying on different networks you perform still results in the phone returning the message,"unable to connect". Irregardless of WPA, WEP, or no authentication(my case).

Both currently are MAJOR issues which Apple has FAILED to address. In addition they have been totally ignorant about requests for service replacements with the same model, as in I have a factory unlocked phone (which I paid alot for) which they will replace only with a factory locked phone. Totally, utterly disappointed here and wish I had never bought their products in the first place... They will definitely reap my vengeance for their incompetence.I am seriously ******.

This thread has been going for a while now, the iPhone issues too.
As for getting iPhone support in Belgium,..., you should try going to a Mobistar center, second to none.
Apple retailers don't sell the iPhone anymore, either because they don't get any or they only make a few Euro doing so. So As for support: none
I literally tried about anything that is possible to try, most didn't work, some temporary.
Now, the reason why I decided to make this one last post is:
1. I completely had it, done with the patience
2. My iPhone is dead!
Yes you've read it right, DEAD!
It went from bad to worse. I installed the 3.0 update on June 17th. No WiFi, the main topic of this threat. Countless resets, restores and re-installations later, it started to malfunction in being recognized by iTunes, it didn't want to charge anymore, after opening the phone(I opened the phone as I posted in a previous message, this is fairly easy to do and I'm an electronics technician) everything seemed to be working, wifi dropped back after 1 day everything else (including Bluetooth) worked pretty fine. Then the phone screen didn't turn off anymore while calling, and then, suddenly, yesterday, when trying to reset for resolving these issues, BLANK SCREEN! The screen went all white, couldn't turn it off anymore, cannot reset anymore, cannot do anything anymore...
I want to sincerely thank Apple for ruining a perfectly fine iPhone with a ridiculous software update! I will think about before I invest €K in Apple products next time.
I've been an Apple customer for the last decade, I've always been happy with their products but this is a bridge too far. I'm done convincing people to move to the mac.
Bear in mind that they sell the iPhone unlocked in Belgium, this was, at that time, setting us back €525 ($740) for the 8Gb 3G and €625 ($881) for the 16Gb 3G. That's a lot of money for not getting support, isn't it?
Compared to the US for example they charge a ridiculous amount of money for the devices. OK, we don't have to take a contract for two years but that's all relative. We also have to pay the monthly fee within the existing contract with our operator.

Just for your information. The iPhone is currently available to us here in Belgium for the following price:
3GS 16Gb: €575 ($810)
3GS 32Gb: €675 ($952)
3G 8Gb: €475 ($670)

Kind regards and success with your issues, I will probably have to make an HTC move 😟

Had my 3G of about 2 weeks. Upgraded to 3.0 at first sync. WiFi worked for about 1 week before it started dropping out, then yesterday was running Shazam for about 1 hr and it dropped out. A couple of times it looked like it was going to connect but didn't. Then it stopped seeing access points altogether. Turned the iPhone off and on again and there was no WiFi at all - in settings "No WiFi". Phoned Apple and they were excellent. They have replaced the phone.

I won't upgrade till a new update for 3.0 comes out. A bit annoying that some of my programs require 3.0.
