Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

Bummer. I know you've been watching this thread a long time too. I'm surprised when I hear the PCB completely fails. Check out the comments by jayjay70 at the bottom of this http://www.iphonetiquicia.com/iphone-wifi-oven-trick/

He baked his phone twice and it still ran. It's a long shot, but you might consider trying to reflow again. I originally reflowed my phone emi shield down (so did paraglider) but I think it might be better to do it emi shield up because after seeing the emi shield removed it looks like the factory would need to reflow it with the chips facing up so they didn't drop out of the board during the reflow. I don't know anyone who's tried it that way yet, but if you attempted this fix with a heat gun instead of an oven you'd direct the gun down onto the board in that direction.

Were you able to keep an eye on the oven thermometer during the whole baking process? Were you using a standard oven or a convection? I'd like to know how the PCB failures happen so we can minimize the risk of reflowing.

Allright last cook is behind and now pcb is cooling down in the oven. This time a cooked it emi shiel up. I would't want to make this much more times since I'am a bit worried about those pcb connectors. Those are not tend to be opened daily I suppose.

btw: if someone is going to this path please notice that one of those screws in pcb is a little longer than others. It's the on with the sticker DO NOT REMOVE.

Opening 3G iPhone is a simple task if you are carefull. Only bit harder thing is the camera cable under the pcb. Putting that back needs some attention.

I used that karate figure with suction cup to remove the touch screen from the body 🙂 (see my pictures on another site)

What do you mean? Come on, join the club. For me, since putting my finely designed, highly engineered piece of Apple technology in the freeze stopped working, I am going to cook it in the oven and if that does not work, I am going to try my George Foreman Grill, my microwave and my Weber cooker after that. If that fails I am going to place it in my Jack LaLanne juicer and my blender as a last resort. Thanks Apple!

Awesome news, jayjay70! And congratulations on being able to bake your phone a full _three times_ and still not kill the PCB. Yours is reacting similar to mine after I baked it. I assembled and wifi came right up. Still works like a charm.

Did you happen to notice if your phone runs cooler now? Again, thanks for the spectacular feedback.

Yes I just came back to report that my iPhone seems to run cooler and belive or nor battery consumption seem to be reduced?

Just finished watching WRC rally videos thru wifi and device is working great!

btw: 3rd time I cooked it temp was same than before, but I gave it 9min's in the oven on +1 min oven off before opening the oven hatch.

I suppose it's better to try couple of times with same temp just holding into oven some more time if first try does not work.

It's now my oven apple 🙂
