Battery goes down incredibly fast after 3.0 update?

Hi there,

Has anyone else noticed that their battery indicator seems to be going down at a rate of knots after the OS3 update? I took mine off charge full this morning at 0730. It's now 0950, I've not used the phone much at all and it is below half way already!!

Yes my phone has been running much hotter too. Normally it isn't noticeably hot but last night it was almost worryingly warm.

I'm actually in the process of doing a restore as we speak. That seems to be O2's answer to any woes judging by other forum posts so I thought I would give that a go before anything else. I'll let you know how I get on!

Saw this phenomenon yesterday, very rapid battery discharge and a noticeable heat build-up in the phone.

So far this morning, after it has charged normally over night, it seems fine.

If this problem is a recurring one, it's likely an runaway app. Which one is another issue, last time this occurred I turned off PUSH .. PUSH was blamed as it constantly tried to get a response from a service that was not engaged ~ made sense at the time.

Hi,

i got the same problem here. This phone came from the orange. the phone is 3 weeks old. After the upgrading, the battery life going down, its not enaugh for a night either. So i think something. And i tried everything. No running application, no 3g no wifi... but im just wondering, because before the upgrade, everything was perfect. The wi-fi runed all the time the push runed all the time, apps runed all the time and the battery was good enaugh for two days... so i think something is not perfect with this upgrade...

I seem to remember when 3.0 was being given a public preview at an Apple event, there was some talk of Push and how it affects battery life on mobile devices. If I recall correctly (no guarantees here!) the device constantly has to be in a state to receive data as and when it becomes available, therefore the device has to maintain a constant 'listening' state - the consequence is that it needs to use more power to remain in this state.

Apple claims their implementation is more efficient than the Push implementations on competitor devices - they left an iPhone and another device (blackberry?) on Push, and the iPhone consumed less battery. But it would still have an effect on overall battery life. I noticed my battery was more drained than usual - I don't think my usuage was much different from a typical day, so I've tried turning Push off and set my Google mail to Fetch every 15 mins. I'll see how it looks at the end of the day.

Yes, my battery life was extremely poor after 3.0 update, but in my case it may have been related to problems with the AT&T 3G signal in my area. On the first night I went to sleep with the batt level at 85%, woke up the next morning (7-8 hours later) and it was at 18%. Last night the batt level was around 89% and this morning it's at 73%. I can only think of 2 reasons why it's better now. First, It was probably trying to find a 3G signal the 1st night and drained the batt but now 3G is ok so no more constant searching... or, maybe it was just an adjustment period while the new software got acclimated with the hardware. Not really sure, but I'm happy now.

I found the solution for this (for me at least). I did two things and it has fixed the problem.

(1) I turned Bluetooth off and on again

(2) I deleted an old (now defunct) Exchange email account

Not sure which of these fixed the problem, but within 10 minutes my phone was noticeably cooler and it ran for the rest of the day with the battery draining as normal. Hurrah!

Hope this helps someone!
