I performed the 3.0 upgrade (sorry I did that)and now, the Maps programs and my GPS program constantly show the wrong "current location". Anyone else have this problem after the upgrade?
I also have this problem: updated to 3.0 yesterday and everything is great except GPS does not get a fix. Location by cell tower and wifi works, but accuracy beyond that just doesn't happen. Have tried restart by holding down home and lock button, but to no avail: normal switching on/off hasn't worked either. Am reluctant to wipe my phone and restore from backup, but it looks like that's what it might come down to if nothing else works.
Has iPhone 3.0 broken GPS?! Any response would be appreciated.
Same here, prior to the upgrade the location was exact (using my office as a start point) now it gets a range of address locations when you request additional information. Same with using my house as a test start location.
Prior to 3.0 - location would read 2340 anywhere lane
After 3.0 - location reads 2300-2350 anywhere lane
well since i updated to iphone 3.0 july 17 2009
and i restored all my iphone when i updated
my "current location" has not work probably as it gives me like a location a few miles away from my location
example is like a big circle and the center is a solid circle
then after a time waiting the big circle reduces its size but still does not show exact location !!!!!!!!!!!!
before the updated it showed !
example is like a big circle and the center is a solid circle
then after a time waiting the big circle disappear an shows exact location
i don't know why ?
Do i need to restore all the iphone ?
update again in another computer?
Hi All,
Well, I called Apple Support this morning and spoke to a live person to troubleshoot the issue with the gps feature of the iPhone. They have no clue as to why it will not correctly display your "current position". No one there wants to admit that 3.0 upgrade is a real dog and has screwed up our iPhones. The only advice he offered was that perhaps my iPhone has a hardware error and may need to be replaced . . . . . . huh ?? Everything worked fine with the old 2.xx OS and now, post 3.0 upgrade, the gps function is shot. Oh well, thats all I can offer at this point.
Yes, I had a similar call with them this morning also. Basically it was "oh, well I wasn't aware there was a problem in that area, I'd suggest you keep plugging it in and checking for upgrades that might resolve the issue in the future"! Very helpful ... NOT!
Bit of an update... Have had GPS finally working today, the blue blip started radiating the blue waves (if you get what I mean) but it's still very patchy and often still has the translucent blue outer circle a lot of the time. On top of that, getting a signal is still highly hit/miss, and I dunno it's from using GPS or just in general but my iPhone's now eating battery life like there's no tomorrow.. Seriously, 4-6 hours on a full charge, and it ran out of battery hen using maps when plugged into an in car charger! Got no idea what's going on with this.. Will try doin a full charge cycle and see if the situation improves. This GPS update problem is clearly not just the odd phone.. I'd they're saying it's your phone then they're likely wrong especially if it worked before the update! Great features added but pointless if it cripples the phone!
Also having this problem after upgrading to 3.0 software. Maps works fine but 'current location' is totally off. It just seems to locate me in an area around a half mile away from where i am. I've UNSUCCESSFULLY tried:
Disabling WiFi and trying to fix with 3G
Disabling WiFi and 3G and trying to fix with Edge
Restoring the phone from backup
Just got off the phone with a real person from support - they suggested to restore the phone as a 'new phone' and see if the issue was fixed before restoring my backed up data. The support rep basically told me that if this didn't work that they're pretty sure its a hardware issue and i'll have to send the phone in for repair.
I was sure to notify her about this support discussion thread - i don't understand how this could be a hardware issue if many people are all reporting the same problem, each one occurring after the 3.0 OS upgrade - unless the 3.0 OS is frying the GPS hardware in the phone, which i highly doubt.
I'll be trying to restore the phone and see how it locates itself as a 'new phone' later tonight, if that doesn't work i'm supposed to call them back and go from there. I have a friend who lives nearby having the same problem with his iphone - i'm actually surprised there isn't more people reporting this problem as it doesn't seem to be isolated. If anyone finds a fix, even a temporary one, it would be a huge help!
I started having the current location problem after upgrading to 3.0.
On my first generation iPhone, while at home, it used to be pretty accurate. After upgrading it to 3.0 it puts me about 2 miles away - exactly where I used to live 8 months ago.
On my new 3gs, if wifi is turned off, it give a correct current location. As soon as wifi is turned on - you guessed it, 2 miles down the road to where I used to live again.
The common denominator here has to be the MAC address on my wireless router. I think the 3.0 update got tied to an out of date database of wifi locations somehow.
Same issue here. I had 2 meter accuracy before the update. Now its useless. I love how they introduced "Find My iPhone" and sent you on a wild goose chase. Maybe this is why TomTom has not released their app yet.
To state the obvious: if its hardware, why is the issue so universal?
I too am having similar issues.. Has anyone heard of a fix? Does accomplishing a "Recovery" remove this strange anomaly? Apple!! What is going on? Lol... Where am I?!?!?!
