Importing Voice Memo to GarageBand

I'd like to use Voice Memos from my iPhone in my podcast, but when I drop a Voice Memo m4a file into a track, all I get is a staticky whine. If I convert to AAC, it works just fine, even though the file is still identified as m4a.

Is this the best way to import Voice Memos to GarageBand?

The problem is that the Voice Memo m4a file is corrupted when dropped into a GarageBand track. The workaround is to convert the Voice Memo m4a to AAC in iTunes and drop that file into GarageBand. This could be a GarageBand issue, since I believe it converts any audio file to AAC when you drop it in a track. At least that's what it does to my mp3 and WAV files.
