Installing a cups printer driver

Hi - I need to install a CUPS printer driver, so that I can print via a network server.

I have found the relevant driver & it is packaged as a .rpm

Do I need to download an RPM installer to do this?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

I would say this depends. Is it a Mac server? If so then the CUPS driver to which you referred will not work. You would need one specifically for use with OS X.

Now a USB printer is not a network printer. It must be connected to a USB port either on a computer or a router. Then the printer must be accessed as a shared printer using Printer Sharing in OS X' Sharing preferences.

All printers running under OS X use CUPS, so be definition the printer driver must be a CUPS driver.

Checking the Epson site I cannot find a printer with the model number you provided. I'm assuming this is not a North American product. I cannot check Epson's web site for an OS X driver. The Gutenprint drivers that are part of OS X does have a driver for the DX4800 series, but not for the DX4700 series.

Sorry, I should add some more context.

I'm trying to install a printer on a network server. However, the standard driver associated with my printer (an Epson DX4750) is a USB driver & doesn't work properly via a network server (presumably it attempts some handshake which isn't supported outside USB).

I found a reference on macrumors suggesting I needed a cups driver to avoid this problem - sounds like this suggestion was wrong?

Thanks

I am not sure about a server (we have a separate forum for servers) but when I installed my Epson printers I had a choice of an Epson driver or a cups driver during the installation.

You can access your local cups setup page by pointing your browser to

That's a Linux driver. You need one for OS X. If you have installed the Gutenprint drivers from your OS X installer disc or the printer driver family for your printer's manufacturer or a driver provided by the printer's manufacturer, then you will be able to print once you add the printer via Print & Fax preferences.
