It seems to work for Kevin and Paul in this thread for their external DVD burner. I don't know why yours didn't work. Make sure you follow all the steps in the website. Also read through this entire thread.
What a disappointment to find after I purchased a LaCie d2 DVD +RW external drive ( the one Apple sells on their site) that there is no way I can create and burn the longer playing dual layer discs with iDVD. How to cripple an otherwise great piece of software.... truly, this is a significant bit of shortsightedness. In retrospect, I probably should have swapped out the internal superdrive in my G5 but hated to do so since it is less than 9 months old. Also I was discouraged from doing this by the Apple Technical support folks. So my vision of Apples fine products diminishes somewhat!

how do u unstuffit
how do u unstuffitThe downloaded file is a "compressed" file, normally you should have the Stuffit Expander already installed on your system (if not, download it from here. When you have it, you simply double-click the downloaded MBiDVD4ALLDUAL.sit, and it will expand to its original file.

It worked thank u so much just one question what does vendor support mean
Both Kevin and Paul use LaCie external burners, that are supported by Apple (at least unofficially). I have a NEC burner, unsupported. I can assure you, I went through all the steps described in the French publication, but iDVD does not show the option of extending a project beyond 4GB for me.
The problem is definitely with iDVD; my System Profiler recognizes the NEC burner and shows it able to burn R+DL type. What's more, iDVD also recognizes the burner and I can burn standard (single layer) disks with it. It just refuses to do DL, not even for a disk image.
Finally the email from Lionel, who published the hack, shows that it was not intended for external burners.

... what does vendor support meanWhat that means is that a drive profile has been provided by the drive vendor.

Hi Gareth,
Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver) Mac OS X (10.4.3)
I dont have a DL burner connected as I was hoping to burn a disc image then borrow a LaCie DL burner, is this possible??.No, you must have your DL drive plugged in even though you are only saving a disk image, not burning to a DVD. Otherwise, the system does not know you have a DL burner, therefore, disable the DL capability.

thanks for that.....looks like i'll have to borrow the burner sooner than i thought!
I was so happy to find this post. Thank you so much for detailing the steps to overcome this problem. I burned my first DL disc out of iDVD yesterday and it works perfectly. What a relief! I was so mad when I found out you needed a newer G5 with an internal superdrive. My LaCie is kickin' butt now!. Thanks again.
hello.
i have tried to apply this patch to a mac mini i am using temporarily and a la cie D2 DL drive
i ran the patch...and took out the lacie drive and none of it work.
but what bothers me is that when i try to save it as a disc image i get an error saying "your project exceeds the maximum allowed contect duration...." and this is trying to save it as a disc image so i can burn my project (4.8gb) using toast.
someone help me. PLEASE

Hello Black Muscle,

i ran the patch...and took out the lacie drive and none of it work.I assume you have followed the instructions given in website and read through the info in this thread. You need to have the LaCie drive plugged in while you are using iDVD, otherwise, the system doesn't think you have a DL drive.
