Can I delete old iPhone software updates?

My hard drive is getting quite full, upon inspection of it I found a bunch of old iPhone software update files located (from memory) user/name/Application support/iTunes/iPhone software update

Can I delete these? They are taking up 2 gigs of space. Are they needed for future updates?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

* Mac: ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates
* Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
* Windows Vista: iPhone: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

Where would I find these old files on a PC? If they are using up that much space I would like to delete them also. Thanks for your help.
