Reducing size of M4A music files

I've just got an itouch and set up itunes and imported all my 100plus CDs into itunes. I then of course found they couldn't all fit onto my 8 meg itouch as I'd imported them in the highest quality so they are typically 6 to 8meg each song. I would like to keep these high quality versions saved, for when I listen to the songs on my computer, but also convert them to a lower quality format for when I listen to them on the itouch (so more will fit on)

How do I convert them while keeping the original high quality version, or do I have to re-import them all ... in which case can I do this and keep the high quality version too?
Thanks!

If they are already imported, and you don't mind a little quality loss, you can use iTunes to create new versions in a lower bitrate. Go into import settings and choose a lower bitrate, such as 128. Highlight the tracks you want and use the command Advanced > Create AAC/MP3 version.

This will create new versions and add them to your library. It will leave your original high bitrate versions untouched.

Put the lower ones in a separate playlist and only sync that playlist to the iPod.
